My folks will be joining us in St Remy the weekend of my father's 85th birthday. The least we can do is take him out to celebrate. Cost isn't a factor, don't want to go too far (1/2 hour max) and I don't want to say he will eat anything but there are no limitations in cuisine. Any suggestions?

Are you staying in St Remy? We took our father for his birthday one year, to the L'Ousteau de de Beaumaniere in Les Baux. To this day he still talks about that place.

If it is open, just outside of St. Remy, is the restaurant La Maison in the Auberge Mas de Bournissac. It is near a place called "Paludes'??. Also, in nearby Maillane is the Oustalet de Maillane. Both restaurants are within 20 minutes of St. Remy.

If it happens to be the fourth Thursday of the month, and weather is bad, you might consider Gousse d'Ail right in St. Remy. Food and service are great and that particular night is jazz night and fun all around. Verify that it is still jazz night if you are planning to go.

I also would recommend the Maison de Bournissac. We stayed there last summer and had a wonderful and elegant dinner. It is a place worthy of a celebration, and is only a few minutes drive outside of St. Rémy.

The Oustau de Baumanière would also be wonderful.

I wouldn't recommend the Gousse d'Ail for this occasion, myself. It's OK, but not nearly on the level of the other two for a special occasion.

The one-star Régalido in nearby Fontvielle might be just the ticket. It's on the small side, with one room limited to non-smokers, and the food is excellent--lamb and fish are specialties, but there are quite a few choices. If the weather is nice you can have a pre-meal drink in the garden; if the weather is cool, the lobby with fireplace is cozy and comfortable. My husband still remembers the marc sorbet he had for dessert two nights running when we were staying there in the hotel.

I can second St. Cirq's recommendation of La Petite France in nearby Maussane. It would definately fit the bill for a special occasion. It is located in a small, charming village in what must be an old remodeled home.
Service was impeccable with many courses. I do remember what I think was a duck ravioli appetizer that was fantastic. Also they have a large cheese cart that has probably 40 different cheeses to sample. My first thought was, with all the courses, I could pass on the cheese. It was unbelievable! Tastes and textures to truly die for. Very memorable spot.

Well, I emailed the hotel to ask them to make a reservation at La Petit France. They responded "Concerning your reservations for the restaurants la petite france is no longer what is was.If you want a good restarufant there is the bistrot d'eygalieres which has won is second star in le guide michelin." We stayed at this hotel last year and their restaurant recommendations were very good. What do you think? TIA

What they are trying to tell you is that if you are looking for a Michelin-starred place, they are no longer "that kind of restaurant." The owner gave up his star awhile back and decided just to cook the way he wanted to cook for the people he wanted to cook for. I aadmire both his food and his attitude. Go - you won't be disappointed!

We ate at La Petite France two years ago as mentioned previously when it was a Michelin starred restaurant. It was great then.

We returned last Tuesday and it is now Bistro La Petite France. All changes are for the better IMHO. Interior changes have made the dining experience more comfortable, less stiff less formal.

They now have a four course prix fixe menu for 25E which we thought was an unbelievably great value. The service is great. And the food - superb!

I agree with StCirq - Go,you won't be disappointed.

A thumbs up for the Auberge La Régalido in Fontvielle. Dining overlooking the lush garden was a wonderful way to enjoy our tenth anniversary. The food, the staff, the ambiance could not have been better.
