Where to stop on Italy's west coast
We will be traveling from Canton Ticino in Switzerland to Piedmont in Italy researching family history. Once we leave Piedmont we planned to travel down the west coast of Italy stopping along the way. We will have about 10 days once we leave Piedmont. Wondering about some "must see" stops along the way down to the Amalfi Coast and any recommendations for inexpensive, clean, safe places to stay.

Prices may vary but we stayed in Sept 2013 at these west coast hotels and enjoyed the rooms and breakfast at each.
Santa Marinella- Hotel Isola about $90 E
Castiglioncello- Hotel Leopoldo about $90 E
San Vincenzo- Hotel was over $100 euro but on the beach
Livorno- Grand Hotel Palazzo was about $150 E but over the top gorgeous and our splurge.
We used Bookings.com and just booked one night prior to arrival and because you don't pay until you stay, you get some leeway if you want a different room or floor etc.

Neckervd - that seems like a lot of stops for 10 days! Is that doable?
Snowgirls - thanks for the hotel tips! I will check them out and I like booking 1 night ahead, especially because we don't know where we are going to be!

Stayed here too, just outside of Luccas' walls ( cheaper) about 10 minute walk to ancient walls and. Cars have limited access and parking- that's kind of a theme in many places in Italy but we were cycling.

A great place and inexpensive town is Priano.I am having a senior moment and can not remember the name of the hotel we stayed at but it was cheap, beautifully run by very nice people with fabulous views from room terraces.
.
It was recommeded by IRA who posts frequently and has already posted on this topic perhaps he will look in again and give you the name. If not I will try to remember and post again.
A town that we stayed in on a drive down to Calabria is Maretea. My husband and I loved the town.

Hi
I just remembered the name of the hotel It is called
Le Sirene.
I highly recommend it, however there are many steps so if you have problems with climbing it may not be a good suggestion.
We loved the hotel and the town.
There was a really good restaurant in the town that the owners of the hotel recommended .It was so good we ate there twice. If you stay there I am sure they will give you the name

Another vote for Praiano. I stayed for a week at Pellegrino Pension (also called Hotel Pellegrino) last May. Spectacular views, helpful friendly hosts, and a first class breakfast overlooking the sea. You can read more details about Praiano and Pellegrino Pension in my trip report, http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...alfi-coast.cfm

Directly above Positano lies Nocelle, a very small and untouristy village with incomparable views. We used that as our AC base last year and the price was right.
We stayed here: http://www.casacuccaro.it/ but there were other lovely lodgings there as well. Plus two wonderful small restaurants.

It depends on how far you want to be from Amalfi, but Cetara has some fantastic restaurants, and we loved this b&b:

Above Camogli, I also loved http://www.larosabiancadiportofino.com/.
Both of these places are absolute steals for the view and hospitality.
