Where to stay with a family in Venice?
We are traveling to Venice in October and haven't booked a place to stay yet. Does anyone recommend directly booking a hotel or holding an apartment through Airbnb or similar? I see several units available but a referral/recommendation would be better. However, all suggestions of places and/or owners would be very helpful! Direct links, if available, would be great also!
Thank you in advance!

First, it helps to know what exactly you mean by "family" my family has four kids. In GB a "family" room means two beds for average sized adults and a child's bed.
Generally, most apartments through airbnb or vrbo are a good value, serviceable and acceptable but there is a small risk, in that once there, there may be issues of location or accessibility that you may not like, but would not be concerns to another group. If you wish to try such a venue, Contact the owner to establish rates, availability, and get their take on the location, then come back to this forum with more specifics for a reality check.
We stayed at an apartment available directly connected to a B&B that was delightful. Pensione Guerrato, (www.pensioneguerrato.it) Reasonable rates and excellent service. within easy walking distance of the GrandCanal vaporetto stops and the Ponte di Rialto.
I've been to Venice 2ce, and trust me, it is a very, very tourist friendly town. It is hard to engineer a bad experience. The folks there are keen to maintain this good reputation. There is nothing wrong with emailing a host of apartment owners and being frank about your concerns and getting their feedback. I'm sure you will have the time of your lives, regardless of your choice.

Your nightly budget and number of people would be helpful. I have never rented for more than two in Venice, so I can't be of more help, but I can encourage you to share your budget and family size.

October is still a busy/high season. We are already in mid September and I would feel a bit uneasy if I don't have reservation. I would rather hurry. I stay always at hotels so no comments on apartments. Also I travel either alone or maximum with a friend so no recommendation on family room. My stay is always 3 - 4 nights so hotel stay is good. Did you say how long is your stay?

I have a fantastic recommendation for you but unfortunately only 2 days in October are currently open. In addition to vrbo and Airbnb also try Homeaway.com as it cross lists apartments from the popular Italian website http://www.homelidays.it/.

We (family of 4)traveled in early July 2013 and stayed in hotel Dimora Marciana, very close to St. Mark Square . We had a family room ,queen bed in the main room and a separate room with twin beds. Breakfast was included. It was hot and humid so having a strong ac was a must but in October that would not be a necessity. The kids appreciated the fast wifi connection. No view from the room but the hotel is kind of newish so everything was nice and modern. We stayed 2 nights and for this reason i didn't bother looking for an apartment. We paid cash upon check in and get a 'cheaper' rate. Friendly owners and will stay there again just for the location alone. I wrote a review on Trip Advisor if you're interested.
