Where to stay one night during our drive from Amboise to Avignon?
Hello,
We are driving from the Lorie Valley to Avignon at the end of October.
We want to spent one night on the road but we are not sure where.
We would love to hear suggestions.
Thank you!

The logical place would be Clermont-Ferrand as it's about half way. It's been a few years since we overnighted there, but it was a pleasant enough town with a reasonable choice of restaurants and hotels.

That does seem the most logical if you do the regular route A71 then A75, I think. If you are taking two days, you could actually go through Orleans to the A6 and come down, it wouldn't take you much longer in total, although toll fares would be a bit more. Then you could stop in Beaune.
If it were me, I've always wanted to see Le Puy en Velay in Auvergne, and while not the normal route, it could easily be done -- just drive down A71 as for Clermont Ferrand and then instead of going east on A75, go SE on N102. It's about 5 hours from Amboise. The next day, just continue on the N102 SE until you hit A7 and then go south to Avignon. That part is about 3.5 hours. It's a UNESCO heritage site, see

I'd take Christina's second suggestion and go via Le Puy. I have done similar to the drive proposed but in reverse. (we started north from Carcassonne).
In Le Puy I recommend the Hotel du Parc. Leave early next morning and take the N88 to Mende then D986 to Ste Enimie where you descend into the Gorges du Tarn. You can head for Millau and cross the viaduct or head east on smaller roads to Ales and Uzes and on the Avignon.

Le Puy en Velay is indeed a good place to stop, but I was very happy with just staying at the Ibis there. Le Puy is one of the most important stops on the Santiago trail and seems to be used by huge numbers of retired Germans as their starting point.

interesting, I didn't know that. I hope to get there some day, I just love the photos of the Dome. I've also always enjoyed the Songs of the Auvergne by Canteloube, I have a couple recordings. They are beautiful and that was what attracted me to the region. This is my favorite version
