My husband and i would like to place ourselves for a few days somewhere in the middle of the rhine and then branch out to the beautiful towns from one town. I know a lot of the towns along the Rhine are very close. We would like to stay in a nice little village.
Any thoughts?
Where to stay on a driving tour of the rhine?

There are many picturesque towns in the valley:
- Lahnstadt
- Rhens
- Braubach
- Boppard
- St. Goar
- Oberwesel
- Bacharach
- Bingen
- Rüdesheim
St. Goar and Oberwesel are most central.
Use www.hrs.de for hotel search.
Lahnstadt? Maybe Lahnstein?
I would add to traveller1959's list the town of Linz, north of Koblenz on the east bank - maybe the nicest of all the villages.
Thank you both for the list of towns. ANother question i have is, do you think we should pre-book hotels in any of these towns since we will be there in early july? My husband and I like to wing it sometimes on road trips. What do you think?
I pre-book. I like to pinpoint my location and to know what I'll be paying, and I don't like to waste time looking for a place to stay when places in my price range may be taken, or to have to take up a search in some neighboring town. Your choice, of course.
I most probably will pre book also. thank you very much for your advice
