Oh, I so need help. I think I'm suffering from research overload, between Trip Advisor and slowtrav, and now you can color me confused. We'll be in Venice for 3 nights after a cruise (end of September), and would like to stay in the Dorsoduro/Zattere area.

So many choices! Our budget is about 200 euro/night (but would increase a tad for the right place). Some likely spots are sold out (so now I'm feeling the pressure!), and all the apartment choices have just confused me more. We're fine with a hotel, locanda, B&B, maybe not an apartment for just 3 nights. One possibility would be Ca Santo Spirito, which seems fairly new and well liked on Venere: any Fodorites stayed there?

We stayed at the Accademia, which was wonderful! But perhaps it is booked?

We were in Venice for 4 nights beginning 4/30 and stayed at the Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo in the Santa Croce area. Excellent hotel, large rooms plus a helpful staff.... It was a bit under 200 euros per night and is apparently well regarded by the Trip Adviser crowd. I am not sufficiently familiar with Venice, though, to know how close this hotel is to your preferred location.

we got back from Venice a week ago.
We did not stay on Dorsoduro, just walked around .
I liked the area very much.
Very central, but away from crowded San Marco.

I have no experience at Ca Santo Spirito, but we've stayed in that area (at La Calcina) and liked it a lot. It's less crowded but also a longer walk to most sights. If your plan is just to wander Venice, I wouldn't hesitate to stay at Ca Santo Spirito. With an ambitious sightseeing list, however, I would want to be closer to the Accademia bridge. Riding the vaporettos from that area can save steps, but I don't find it saves time.

Sorry to disagree with you, PeaceOut, but we stayed at Casa Rezzonico in 2008 and while it's not terrible, it wouldn't be my first choice. No lobby area,and from our diary "We awoke to the church bells at 7:00 a.m. Breakfast was in the hotel garden. The selection was sub-par. No fresh made rolls or coffee cake. No cappuccinos. No meats or cheeses, just juice, yogurt, cereal, store bought rolls and croissants, coffee and tea."
We did like the Dorsoduro area and Venice a lot.

packed, I understand. Rezzonico is so inexpensive, I would not expect fresh made bakery items or meats and cheeses. At that price, I am happy when a place is clean, well-managed, well-located, and nice looking.

We also stayed at the one-star Hotel Riva, which is another great budget choice near San Marco but in a side area right where two canals merge.

The Pensione Seguso on the Zattere is perfect for us. I would never stay at the Galleria again, our room was tiny and the bathroom was ridiculous.

Decision made -- none of the above, because some were sold out...

In the end, we settled on a new contender, Locanda Ca Zose. <http://www.hotelcazose.com/> Good location for us, good TA reviews, and the price is right! Thanks for your help, and I'll report back after the trip.

That's why I specifically recommended Room 10 - it's huge and the bathroom was perfectly fine, and they bring your breakfast to your room, where you can enjoy watching the morning traffic on the Grand Canal while eating.

Well done from me too - it does look nice and the location is good. When we came to Venice on holiday we always stayed in Dorsoduro and had hoped to find a long-term apartment there, but no luck.

You'll like the area, we rented an apartment close by in April and really enjoyed where we stayed.

Another vote for La Calcina (never stayed there), but the location on the Zattere is terrific.I did eat lunch on their "deck" overlooking the Giudecca Canal last week.

Ca' Rezzonico - I have first hand knowledge of because we stayed there for four nights, albeit the year 2006. The continental breakfast is mostly bakery products, yogurt, some fruit, coffee, tea, etc. There is a lovely garden in the rear where you can eat your breakfast (inside as well).The staff at that time was attentive and helpful.

I just got back from Venice where I stayed at Hotel al Ponte Mocenigo. Yes, the rooms are large, newly furnished, new bathrooms, adequate continental breakfast (you can eat inside and outside). Sandro and Walter (owners) are top notch. We stayed in the (first) annex and the AC worked well - never even heard it go on and off.

The San Stae Vaporetto stop is just a short walk from the hotel. Be aware, the only vaporetto that stops at San Stae is Number 1.
