Where to stay in the lake como region for 1 night
I will be travelling around italy in June and finishing up in Milan. I was wondering if I could please have suggestions for where to stay in the lake como region for an overnight stay. I'll spend my first night in Milan as I will be travelling from Naples, getting in late afternoon. I'll leave my suitcase there.
The next day which is a Sunday I thought I'd train it to Varenna or Como. Drop off a small backpack at the hotel and take off on a ferry to Bellagio. The next day I might spend some time discovering Como before heading back to Milan in the afternoon or early evening.

Hi, sorry about the confusion. My question is:-
- where in Lake Como Region should I stay? Como or Varenna or somewhere else?
- any recommendations for a B&B or hotel in the 80-90 euro budget range?
Thank you.

I've stayed at the Albergo Firenze in the center of the town of Como a couple of times. Just walk down the hill from the train station; 2 minute walk to the boat docks. Great breakfast.

If I had only one day to see Lake Como, the city of Como would not be on my list of places to visit. The southern tip of Lake Como CANNOT compare to mid-lake vistas. Varenna is one of the easiest cities to visit from Milan, and visually, it offers the very best views of the entire lake. The sunsets from Varenna are fantastic.
Albergo del Sole is under new management, and I believe they offer the cheapest single in town at 95€. They are conveniently located in the town square, which makes a decent base for a very quick overview. Bellagio is a fast ferry ride from Varenna, and the walk to the ferry dock from Albergo del Sole is lovely.
If I were you, I would spend the night in Varenna, and go home with a truly beautiful visual memory, if not a few really lovely photographs.

Why not just take the train an extra hour from Milan all the way to Varenna and stay two nights? You'll get a lot more out of your trip if you aren't packing up to leave barely 24 hours after you've arrived. Having two nights means an entire day to explore instead of only part of one.
If you can stretch your budget a tiny bit more, Eremo Gaudio has fabulous views (and was reco'd to me by NYCFoodSnob many years ago).
Ideally you'd want a room in the top part of the hotel, with a balcony, but even if you don't have a balcony you will still have fabulous views from the public parts.

Recommend training to Varenna (but be ready to jump off promptly, they only stop for about 60 seconds) and take the ferry to Bellagio. We stayed at the Hotel du Lac right near the ferry landing, which was fine for our porpoises (;-) ) and our room had a breathtaking postcard view across the lake.
You get a lot of cheap sightseeing in just arriving and traveling by ferry.
