Where to stay in southern France

My husband and I will be traveling to Italy, France and ending in Barcelona in Oct. 2016, for 3 weeks. We currently have all of our reservations made except for the 4 nights we will be in Southern France. 2/3 the way through our trip, we will be leaving from a small town, Embrun, close to the Italian border. Any suggestions for a good place to spend the other 4 nights in southern France that we could make interesting day trips from? We are in our late sixties, have driven in Europe before and are not looking for any big cities, but rather smaller, hopefully with parking close to the hotel. I would also like it to be within approx. no more than 4 hours from Barcelona, Spain, as that will be the final stop of our trip. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Check out Uzès, which is fairly equidistant.

If you perchance are renting a car in France and dropping it in Spain, I suggest you dump it in Montpellier and take a train [3 hours] to Barcelona.

As RonZ says, don't do multi-country car rentals: the extra drop charges are immense.

There are lots of possibilities. Carcassonne might interest you. It is UNESCO listed and there is plenty to see in the city and around it. It is also within 4 hours of Barcelona.

If you prefer to stay on the coast you might try Banyuls-sur-mer which is a small resort and not to touristy. It's close to the better know Collioure but in my humble opinion much more pleasant.

Another option is to just stop off in different places. If you get a catalogue for 'Logis de France' (available in most tourist offices) they list small family run hotels and you can usually ring up on the day and book a room.

Hope that is of some help.
