A good starting point would be two threads here Left Bank Hotels and Right Bank Hotels. If you do a search, there is a wealth of info there.
You are...two people? Any particular needs (walk to Eiffel for example).
In all, for a first time visit, the 4th/5th/6th/ arrondissements come out as good choices. Based on this, have a look at a map of central Paris, to situate yourself.

Thanks - that is a lot of information! There are 2 of us. Would like to be within walking distance to one major attraction (Louvre, Eiffel, Notre Dame, whatever!). Was thinking 1, 4 ,5 or 6 arrondissements, but wanted to get others opinions.
Thanks for your help!

I've stayed o Ile St Louis (4th). Is is the island next to the island where Notre Dame is located. Samll island, one main street, older buildings. Easy walk to Notre Dame. Seine is one block away, RER train to airport is a walk away. Also, good restaurants on main street. At night, bit quieter since only traffic is cars going across the Seine via island. Hotels are nice, but rooms tend to be a bit smaller. IMHO, a prime location.
Some hotels:

I don't think you will be disappointed.

If you stay in the 1st arrondissment, you can reach all the attractions of Paris, by metro or walking. I stayed once in the Timhotel Le Louvre, it was nice and quite affordable for the centre of Paris, you can check it: www.h-louvre.com.

A hotel in the 1st that we thoroughly loved was the Britannique. Quiet street, yet a block from the Seine and so many attractions. The hotel is beautiful and in your price range. I would return in a heartbeat
