Where to stay in Napoli
I have read some reviews on Trip Advisor for what look to be nice hotels, but people say to stay away because of the "creepy" people in the neighbourhood.
Where are some good areas to stay in Naples.

Hi two
I stayed at Hotel Pinto Storey, 3 *, single room 85E/night, extra to turn on the AC which had already been turned off for the season. Double-paned windows for quiet. In the Chiaia (SP?) district, supposed to be Napoli's nicest neighborhood and it did seem very nice. The hotel was just about 1 street over from the shopping street filled with the top designer shops - Ferragamo, Gucci, etc.
It's in a great location, just across Piazza Amadeus from the metro stop of the same name. I walked around the neighborhood and used the metro and felt totally comfortable. Had great pizza at a neighborhood place.
Buon viaggio!

Napoli is indeed hit or miss in terms of the areas to stay in. I have stayed in the "Chiaia" area by the water at "Le Fontane al Mare", located at Via Niccolò Tommaseo, 14 (011-39-081-764-3811). It is across from the beachfront and Castel dell'Ovo, and next to the Villa Communale (lovely park, Naples Aquarium is there too). The hotel is actually up on the 5th floor of a residential/office building and you pay 10c to ride the elevator up (or you can walk and get plenty of daily exercise!). The seaview rooms with balconies have incredible views of the Gulf of Naples and at 100 euros a night (including breakfast), that can't be beat! The hotel is adjacent to the Santa Lucia area and you can walk down to the Molo Beverello port to catch a ferry to Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi, etc. for convenient day-trips.
I have friends that live in Vomero (the lovely hilltop location above Napoli) and the neighborhoods, restaurants, and hotels up there are very nice (and expensive). Also, I have heard good reviews of the Hotel Pinto Storey and that location is ok too.
While in Napoli, you should definitely try eating at an excellent, famous place known by the locals for wonderful neopolitan pizza (margherita pizza was created in Napoli) "Antica Port'Alba" at Via Port'Alba, 18. (Telephone 011 39 081 45 97 13). It is always open and you do not need reservations. It is an old (100 years+) pizzeria built into the former walls of the city and they serve some of the best pizza in Naples. I was just there in Sept and our lunch prices for 2 large pizzas, contorno (insalata caprese), 2 bottled waters, and cover charges came to under 30 euros.

Yes, Ira has lots of good suggestions, we stayed at one of the locations that his link takes you to. I remember that there was a huge center piece in the middle of the square. Perhaps it was formally a fountain? The area was definitely a bit rough around the edges---like alot of Naples but we never felt threatened. We like the city
Lots of people, including police, during the day. Great pizza!(In the middle of the night someone was throwing bottles across the square!)The hotel itself was perfectly safe and clean. We requested a cab at 7 a.m. and sure enough it was there waiting. We requested that the driver turn the meter on, which he reluctantly did. He turned out to be a good driver with no theatrics----and that earned him an extra tip, which he both graciously accepted & acknowledged.

Here are a couple more hotel ideas. I haven't stayed at any of them, but I thought they looked good.
We are staying at the Constantinopoli 104 this upcoming August. www.costantinopoli104.it
We also considered Donnaalnina7 www.donnalbina7.it and Portabla33 http://www.portalba33.it/english/home.html.

We stayed at the tried and true -- the Excelsior in Santa Lucia. Spectacular view of the bay and Capri from the balcony. Lots of restaurants in the area, but you're a bit out of the way for exploring the rest of the city. I think I'd try one of those Spaccanopoli suggestions next time -- although, you can always take a cab.

I'm currently still researching hotels in Naples but have decided to go for the historic centre. I considered the Pinto Storey but thought it was too far away from the sights. The Santa Lucia / other waterfront hotels look lovely but they seem to appeal to people who think the historic centre is too dangerous & who are happy just to stay in that area in the evenings. The only area I've gathered one should definitely avoid is the immediate proximity of the main Piazza Garibaldi railway station.
I looked at the Sansevero places as they were recommended in a book I have (Sawday ? Karen Brown ?) but I was put off them by negative reviews on Tripadvisor.

Hi there -
We were in Naples in Oct 2005 and we stayed at a lovely hotel called the Hotel Chiaja de Charme - we found it to be a great central location in a fairly upscale area.
Located on a pedestrian street lined with shops, we wandered the surrounding neighbourhood nightly - before and after dinner with no concerns whatsoever. The rooms were furnished very well and the staff was very helpful whenever we had any questions.
It was lovely to be able to open our balcony windows in the morning to the sounds of shops opening. Their breakfast was nicely presented and more than filling (buffet). We loved Naples - it was short but memorable!

Hi All,
Thanks for all the responses! Is Napoli a good home base to travel the Amalfi coast, or should I stay in different places. My girlfriend and I plan to be in the region for 6 days.

If you have six days, I would spend four in Naples and two just taking in the Amalfi Coast. For day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Capri, Sorrento is the best location, but as a town, it's very overtouristed and has far too many British and Irish pubs; hence, I would suggest that you do them from Naples.
For the two other days, consider Positano or Amalfi.
