Where to stay in Naples, Italy

Our first visit to Naples and confused about a hotel location. Reading reviews on San Pietro Hotel in Central Station area sound great but I worry about the safety of this area. Chiaia neighborhood seems to be a bit away from main sights but maybe this is the way to go. We love Italy and want to see Naples but do need hotel help.

We stayed in St Lucia at a hotel right on the seafront. Safe area, nice neighborhood, police patrol presence. I liked Naples and believe it is because i liked this area

I stayed at the Chiaia de Charme http://www.chiaiahotel.com/napoli/ this past March, right behind the Pza. del Plebiscito. I thought the location was excellent. Never felt unsafe in the area, or anywhere in Naples, actually, and walkable to everything in the centro area. Not sure I would recommend the hotel, though, as there was a problem with sewer odor emanating from the bathroom. Don't know if that's common all over Naples, but it was definitely a problem in that hotel.

I would not stay near the train station. I stayed at Hotel Rex which is just a block off the water in St. Lucia and I thought it was great.

We liked this B&B, recommended to a friend who also liked it.

We loved HOTEL EXCELSIOR, right on the waterfront. It really doesn't take long to walk to most of the main sites, if you don't mind about a 30-min hike to some of them. We loved the area- beautiful, car-free, lots of seafood restaurants, and of course IL CASTELLO right across the street.

We loved the Hotel Piazza Bellini in the historical centre of Naples. It was close to the Archeological museum, and the area is fascinating. It might look a bit sketchy because of the old narrow streets but it is full of people and we felt perfectly safe.

We also loved Piazza Bellini and you can't get closer to the center.
