Where to stay in Milos

Hello! My husband and I will be traveling to Milos for 3 (full) days. We were looking for some help on where to stay. It seems that the most popular places are adamas, Plaka and pollonia. We are in our late 20s and looking for a place that has picturesque views, close to restaurants and beaches. We will have a car though too.

When you will be going will play a huge factor on where you can stay.

Off season your best choice would be Adamas, the main town/port with a upscale, but still "Greek" waterfront with lots of shops, markets and tavernas. Most stay open throughout the year. Plaka may be a good choice also, but Adamas better.

Off season will have limited options since many of the tourists villages will be shutting down or closed.

Tourist season will offer you more options with Appollonia a great choice if you want a seaside village, nice beach but far less options for services than Adamamas but enough to keep you happy.

A car rental will be beneficial, especially off season since bus service tends to be based on locals going and return from work or children and their schools.

I've been to Milos 2x in late May so can speak to it at that time. The nice thing about Pollonia (not Apollonia) is that it has a decent beach right there ... has 3-4 tavernas, one really good fish place. We enjoyed it. Adamas has MANY restaurants/cafes tavernas ... but its beach is n.g., truly. Not even for sunbathing. However you could consider staying there & driving to beaches (there are 22 of them!!) by day and then having the option of dining in adamas & some bar-oriented nightlife. That way you could enjoy your adult beverages without having to get behind the wheel at 10-11 pm afterwards.

Plaka, the high town is truly beautiful ... at night it could be very quiet. Funny happening On my first Milos visit, of 3 days, I was on my own & no car, so was dependent on busses. I decided to have breakfast in Plaka & took early bus up there, about 7:30 or 8 wandered round, only 1 cafe was open, only customers were me and another visitor. I was hungry & asked for eggs & bacon or sausage. The owner said alas, I only have one egg until delivery later, and that man ordered it. He also had no bread! So I had yogurt, a little grumpily. However, friends of mine who post on FOdors regularly (Stanbr & spouse) stayed in Plaka on their 2nd visit and loved it.

Wherever u stay, 2 MUST-DOs (1) round-the-island sail or half-round (my preference)... real thrill, u get to see volcanic formations not reachable except by boat. The boats line up @ dinnertime in port & you chat w. captains & choose, for next-day trip 10am-6pm. TIP: the catamaran is likelier to be under sail most of time, smaller boats forced to do motor only, when it's windy.(2) Visit Milos Mineral Museum, fascinating display of mining treasures over the centuries, but mainly the STUNNING 30-min. documentary, miners telling their lives (and happily!)... unforgetttable. Wow.

Thanks for the great tips. I think Plaka is out for me then. Any recommendations for pollonia or adamas places to stay? Do you think pollonia is too far away from the beaches to visit?

Jwolf, have u spent any time with a map?? Here is a good online one -- http://www.seakayakgreece.com/virtualtour.htm It will remind you that the entire island is less than 20 km (12 miles) wide ... Pollonia is about 7 km (under 5 mi) from Adamas. And what do you mean about "the beaches""?? as I said, there are 22 of them!

WHERE TO STAY - POLLONIA http://www.milostravel.com/towns.asp - shows more than a dozen very similar small hotels clustered left side of beach: We stayed at Capt. Stavros, also similar ae Villa Sosanna, Nikki Savvas, Villa Mary Elen, Kostantakis studios & more.
Here's the village website http://www.pollonia.com which also lists these. I think that Nefeli Sunset (not on list) is a bit upscale. I'd suggest looking at all of the above Some do have websites and contacting DIRECT (many of these small family-run places don't use booking.com because their rates are so modest they don't want the extra % charged by online agencies). Ask for balcony room w sea view. Rates often at €40 in May.
Re Adamas: I have no recommends but I would suggest checking out
http://www.angelfire.com/super2/gree...-hotelsuk.html -- this is a guy I do trust, not being paid off, has GOOD recommends.

We stayed at Nefeli Sunset and would stay there again. We could walk to town for dinners so no worry about driving after a couple of glasses of wine. They offered car rental on site and picked us up from the port and drove us to the airport.

Yes, it is Pollonia, not Appollonia. We considered Pollonia for our Oct. stay but it was shut down and pretty much deserted. We did see the Nefeli and it looked lovely, right on the water.

However, Adamas was perfect for Oct. and there are more options for shops, markets and tavernas.

We stayed at Villa Notos, a bit more upscale than we normally stay at but off-season price was very good.

Not to miss: Klima, one of the most colorful fishing villages anywhere, the hilltop village of Tripiti, the Ancient Catacombs, the site where the Venus de Milo was found, ancient ampitheater, and remains of a stadium which we "sorta" found. The great thing about all those sites I mentioned are that they are next to each other making it easy to see in a day trip.

As far as whether Adamas Beach is any good . . . just OK, a number of fishing boats moored there. However we did see some nude sunbathing so that made up for the so-so beach! (LOL!)
