where to stay in Malta

I am going to Malta in June with my family of five. We generally make our apartment a home base and do daily trips. Our goals are to go to Gozo one day, Camino Island one day, Valetta one day, maybe marsaxxlok for a half of a day. Any apartment suggestions on where to stay? Any other Malta suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Would like to spend less than $150 per night. Thanks

I liked staying in the old town of Valletta, which I found atmospheric and with good bus connections. There is more tourist infrastructure in the St. Julian's-Sliema area, which I never made it to. The island is small, and if you are renting a car you can stay anywhere--it just depends on if you want to walk to restaurants, etc. For self-catering, you can even rent farmhouses, some have pools.
If you have enough time, consider staying part of the time on Gozo. I was really glad I did and did not have to squeeze everything in on a day trip. I saw better beaches on Gozo (did not get a comprehensive look around Malta though).
Be sure to make reservations if you wish to see the Hypogeum.

My relatives live in Malta so when we went to visit we always stayed in Sliema on Tower Road. You could walk down to the ferry to cross the Harbor to Valetta. Jump on any bus to get to any part of the island. We took the bus to the ferry to Gozo. Gozo is amazing and more traditional and rustic then the very touristy Malta. I would book yourself in for 3-4 days in Gozo if your itinerary can manage it. The beaches are amazing and the lifestyle so laid back in a traditional sort of way. It's cheap to rent a car and travel the single lane (goat path) like roads down to some amazing secluded beaches.

Hi there, I was in Malta over the New year and we stayed at the Corinthia Hotel St Georges Bay, which offers free service to Valetta from the hotel and return, also, the hotel set up a pick up tour for us to go to Gozo for the day. I think it is worth it. We spent 100 Euros per night on the room and the hotel is gorgeous!

I just returned from 1 week + in Malta. We rented an apartment on Tower Rd in Sliema & loved the location.

The 5 of use hired a private tour guide for a full island - with stops in Marsaxxlott, Blue Grotto, Mdina/Rabat, and Mosta.

While Malta is a small island it does take time to get around. From Sliema to Gozo was 2hrs total each way. Sliema to Valletta was 20-30min by frequent bus, or a little longer by ferry (including walking/waiting time).

I did two day trips to Gozo - one with the whole family where we rented a car for the day, and a 2nd time for a full day of biking around the island. Plus several 1 day trips back to Mdina / Rabat to do some geneology research in the National Archives. For those trips we took a taxi as the time by bus would have been 1hr+ each way.

Another vote for Sliema - You can easily get boat tours to Gozo and Comino from there, plus there's a ferry that takes you across Grand Harbour to Valletta.

You can find info on popular places and their pros/cons here: http://www.maltauncovered.com/malta-...where-to-stay/

Couple of options if you decide to go for Sliema: Preluna Hotel & Spa and the Waterfront Hotel. For apartments specifically the only place I know of is Depiro Point which gets good reviews.

Speak to the guys at DHI Ltd, they've been very helpful. Being themselves on the island, they can get you the best deals, at least that's what they've given us! They can be contacted at dhimalta.com

I based (7 nights) in Valletta and liked it much more than Sliema which I found to be sort of a generic holiday town. Valletta is a UNESCO world heritage site with great atmosphere and architecture, Sliema has a lot of bars and shopping. I took the ferry over there a few times to eat and for the views back to Valletta but am glad I didn't stay there.

I took public buses everywhere on Malta including Mdina/Rabat, Blue Grotto, Marsaxxlok, etc. and it was fine. I took a boat trip around the island which stopped for several hours at the Blue Lagoon (Comino Island).

What I did NOT get to was Gozo because once I got there I realized it was too far for a decent day trip by public transportation or bus tour. So I would advise scheduling a few nights there. Even though it means changing hotels and even though Malta is overall quite small, it's the only decent way to get to see Gozo.

I stayed at the Grand Harbor Hotel in Valletta (about 100€/night) which had amazing views, decent breakfast, etc.
