Where to stay in Malta?
We're going to stay a week and I was thinking of splitting it between Valletta and Gozo. Any hotel recommendations? We're not into nightlife so I was thinking either in Valletta or Sliema? The Castille in Valleta is already booked. Do you know of any other hotels in the historic area that might be worthy? We'd like to keep it below 100 euros per night if possible. Or would Sliema be better? Any ideas about good hotels on Gozo? We like to hike, visit ancient sites, wander around, shop, eat good food, etc. We aren't particularly interested in being next to a beach. Thanks for your help!!

You may consider the British Hotel in Valletta, As far as I know they do have a website: www.britishhotel.com. It is run by a family who are the owners of the place and is very small so lots of opportunity to meet locals. If you have no luck here you can settle for Sliema which is only a 20 min busride or a 5 min ferry crossing from Valletta.
Gozo is great but hotels tend to be more expensive there, go to www.visitmalta.com for more info regarding location and facilities. ciao, have fun

Or the Asti Guesthouse (B&B). Good location, wonderful hosts and very clean rooms (though a bit spartan I hear). The price is also dirt cheap. You will need to send them a deposit by post to confirm your reservation. They have a web site giving information.
Looking at your selections, I would not stay in Sliema. You seem to prefer historical/cultural centres. Another decent hotel in valletta is the Osborne. The British somehow would not be my choice.

For a hotel, I would rent a flat for the whole week. It will cheaper and alot more fun. I have family and friends there, and last year they rented us a flat in Gozo for 2 weeks and it was great. We had roof top access, kitchen, 2 large bedrooms, and a living room. And the price was decent. In my opinion, Gozo has better beaches, one in particular - Ramla, that's if you prefer sand. As for historic sites, there are so many around the entire country. Gozo has the oldest temples in the world. There are many caves, and you should just rent a car or take a bus and explore the tiny islands yourself...you will be surprised how much there is to do on such a small piece of land.

Just got back and stayed in Sliema on the waterfront at Carlton Hotel, Tower Road, Tel. (00356) 21315764, www.digigate.net/carlton. A 3 star hotel with clean modest rooms and great views out over the sea. Rate with breakfast, about $55. Bus stop just outside and 20 minutes into Valetta.

Huh! Am I missing something here - looks like recommendations to me. Obviously, someone could just be advertising in the guise of a recommendation. I want to visit Malta early next year and look at these recommendations. Don't think this is the "real" Simon
