for short stays, and if flying out of lhr, we've usually stayed out at lhr and commuted in. lots of hotel categories to choose from.

If you want to stay near Heathrow Airport, Jury's Inn is convenient. It is next to the Hatton Cross tube station, which is the first station as you leave the airport. Only drawback is that it is a long tube ride into town and can be super crowded during rush hour.

but w/o knowing where they are arriving (and IF they are flying out of LHR for that matter) no one can really advise the best area to stay . . .

It's just the 2 of us! We fly home from Heathrow on the 12th but it's not an early flight ?!

I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount on a hotel but still enough that's it's a decent hotel (if that makes sense) lol

I'm not a London expert but as Brit I have to go there sometimes. I tend to stay with cheaper hotels like the IBIS chain or the PremierTravelInn chain. Given you are in France on Business not an unreasonable place to start the hunt. Cheap but clean, good basic restaurant on site.

With the tube lots of places are close to others and given your timescales you may not be lucky but not a bad place to start.

I had a quick look County Hall (directly opposite the Parliament is £368 for two nights 10, 11/March, the Tower Bridge PMInn is about the same price. Prices are high s you are booking late, but not unreasonable.

Well <i>that</i> narrows things down - not

There are hundreds of 'decent' hotels in London (probably thousands) - so you really do need to give us some idea of your budget.

Sorry Crazy, London prices tend on the high side and the place is very big (it will make Paris look like a small town ).

£150 a night does not get you a lot but the bed/fittings should be new and clean, with ensuite. £200 you would expect a bit of luxury. £300 and I'd want loads of extras for the night plus breakfast thrown in with a chocolate on my pillow.

I'm basing all this on my memory of discusions a few months ago, so I think £150 to £200 would hit the mark janisj. Crazy didn't like the idea of coming to Europe at all (first time etc) but came with Husband on business. Looks like Angers was a good visit.

Crazy, you need to understand "the tube". Search on the search box top right and also search "Oyster card". Don't worry if you can manage Paris then London should be easy, after all we almost speak English.

Actually you can get many very nice places for under £150 especially if you use last minute.com. I just booked a lovely hotel in Marylebone ( and area I like as I think it has a village feel whilst being very convenient to theatre land , great shops etc) anyway I got that hotel for £148 incl tax.... It was called The Mandeville. I have booked many last minute hotels for good prices in London.

There are lots of inexpensive hotels near Victoria Station, which is my new favorite area to stay, with convenient transportation from all the airports, and convenient access to almost anything else.

I use www.booking.com to find hotels. You can specify your destination as "London Victoria" or just "London centre". Then you can sort the list by price or by guest rating. The ratings are provided only by certified guests. Read the guest reviews before making a final choice.

Which 'area' do you recommend?! We are planning to take the 'illite car big city' tour...have heard great things!! And I would like to check out notting hill!!! And we fly home from heathrow...
Would spend around $200 on hotel ?! I can easily google hotel options ... I just have no clue which area I should be looking at.... Help!!!! Lol

Darn - I wrote a long post and the site went down.

here is most of it:

The really best bargains will likely be booked up at this late date and it may take a bit of searching. Any hotel along the Piccadilly line will be on the direct line to LHR. If you are arriving on the Eurostar - St Pancras is also on the Piccadilly line.

$200 = approx £184 which is a 'moderate' rate in London. Hotels in that price range tend to book up pretty far in advance

So any hotel near the St Pancras, Holborn/Russell Square, Leicester Sq, Green Park, South Kensington, Gloucester Road tube stations will be convenient to both St Pancras and LHR.

Now that we finally have a number to go on I tried dummy bookings at a couple of my 'tried and true' properties but neither had availability next week.

So I'd just plug your dates and budget into Londontown.com and laterooms.com and see what's available. Also try booking.com Travelodges are cheap-ish (but rates are very date dependent). Some Premier Inns are bargains -- but they tend to book up early.
