Where to stay in Hamburg

Where is a good central place to stay for a couple of nights in Hamburg, and near to bars and restaurants. Any suggestions please for a reasonable priced hotel.

Might help a little if you could define "reasonable."

Hotel costing 90 - 100 euros a night, never having been to Hamburg, have not much idea on price of hotels, is this being unrealistic?

I haven't been to Hamburg yet, but after considering various options I booked the InterCityHotel Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. We are coming and going by train, and this will be very convenient. I used HotelClub and got a rate of 82 Euros including breakfast for a twin room, compared to 117 Euros without breakfast on the Intercity web site. This also includes a daily transit ticket, and this is a well-reviewed 3* hotel.

WillTravel,

thanks for the compliment. But "she" does not apply at all.

And on the subject:

The InterCity hotel is one option. Another might be Garden Hotels Poeseldorf, a couple of stately mansions in a residential area just minutes from the center and the Alster Lakes or Hotel Vorbach, about the same neighbourhood right adjacent to the campus of Hamburg University.

Unfortunately EUR 90.00 narrows the choice a bit - try

www.hrs.de

to get an idea - and post back here for some feedback!

Thanks hsv for all the info you have supplied in posts, definitely will use the www.hrs.de site, nice and clear and in English (a great help!). Have just to get a map of Hamburg now to see exactly where is the best place to stay. Also plenty of choice on that website with hotels in our price bracket.

Rosie,

you could also take a look at the 25 hours hotel.
It is located on the site of a former industrial area in Bahrenfeld, which has been revived a couple of years ago.
While not in the city center, the hotel has reasonable access to local trains (S-Bahn) and provides a young and hip atmosphere, if that's up your alley.
It is owned by the same family as the Gastwerk Design Hotel right opposite the square (a Hamburg family related to one of Germany's biggest publishing groups).
It is also pretty close to the Altona and Ottensen districts, which offer a diverse and lively feel with a couple of groovy (and sometimes slightly trashy) bars and the River Elbe is not too far away either.

Again, get an idea of which hotels you might like and get back here, and I may be able to provide some guidance regarding the respective locations, neighbourhoods or even impressions of the hotels.

I personally think that the Alsterblick is the perfect hotel in this price category. Located on the Outer Alster Lake in the city, close to some of the best neighborhoods in Hamburg. Modern, renovated, well priced, nice staff.
