Where to stay in Amsterdam?

I am currently in the planning stages of a 3 month trip in Europe with my girlfriend. We already have tickets Arriving in Stockholm, Sweden April 27th and leaving Dublin, Ireland July 15th 2016. We will be staying in Sweden with my girlfriends friend for a week and a half.

After we are flying into Amsterdam for four days. If anyone has any suggestion on where to stay, places to eat that would be awesome . We want to see as much as we can i.e red light district, anne frank house etc.

After Sweden we will be going to Amsterdam, Germany, Italy and then to Paris for four days, after to the Uk for a month and then to Ireland for 3 weeks. No dates/lengths are definite besides arriving and leaving in Europe.

You really need to give us a nightly budget for us to reco specific lodgings.

As for what to do/see check out the Let's Go wherever student guides - they will have a lot of good info on budget travel.

For Amsterdam don't miss:

Canal boat tour
Van Gogh museum
Rijksmuseum
Tour one or two of the 17th century merchant's houses (unlike most of europe the Netherlands were run by the wealthy merchants guilds rather than a royal family (although they did have one)

Actually, what you also need to tell us about A-dam is

how you'd prefer to get around
what you want to see and do the most.

There are various hotels I could recommend but some are not as convenient to the usual tourist sights as are others.

However, given what you have said, you might look at the Crowne Plaza which is within walking distance of Centraal Station (a place easy to get to from the airport by rail) and it is within walking distance of the Red Light district as well as directly on tramm lines 2 and 5 which will take you to places like the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh. The hotel will sell you a transit pass at cost, too.

We stayed in the Andaz Hotel. We really like the location, very quiet, close to a lot of attraction. The restaurant in the hotel is also very good.

try Homeland. Just openend, and it's in the former Navy Barracks. Beautiful spot, they're doing very interesting things with an entire area that's just been opened to the public because the entire area used to be classified. Expect beautiful retro design.

Prices are more than reasonable, I read raving reviews about their onsite restaurant by Parool's Hiske Versprille (and that tells you something). And they're on booking

AirBnB is a blight in Amsterdam, and authorities are cracking down on it, discretely, but relentlessly, just as they are doing in Paris. Subletting is almost always illegal, both for people who rent and people who bought their house. And it's a problem because it withholds renting accommodation from the people in Amsterdam who most need it. AirBnB don't care, but you could. Homeland is independent of the big hotel chains, so you know that your money goes towards invigorating part of Amsterdam's historical heritage.

Buy your museum tickets, and especially the Anne Frank house, in advance. Check the websites for current info, but if memory serves me, Anne Frank and the Van Gogh are timed entry tickets.

We stayed at the Sunhead B&B at 152 Herengracht. It is centrally located, the stairs are perfectly creaky, the rooms are comfortable, and the hosts are very friendly.
