Where to stay between Dubrovnik and Split?

I'll travel with my family in October. We will make the journey by car from Dubrovnik to Split. Could anyone suggest a cozy city to spend one night on the way? We enjoy picturesque places, where we can walk in safety and can taste a good meal and a delicious croatian wine.

We enjoyed Makarska. It is about halfway between Dubrovnik and Split. The area is called the Makarska Riviera, and the region has a lot of small towns that fit your criteria. We liked Makarska for it's lovely seaside promenade, lined with nice shops and restaurants, and the yachts moored along he quai.

How about staying in Korcula or Hvar? You could even take the ferry so you don't have to drive the whole way.

I agree with krgystn. Both places are interesting and relaxing.

Another vote for Korcula or Hvar (or indeed Korcula AND Hvar, they are nice contrasts). We went by foot but I assume you can bring cars on the ferry.
