Where to spend 1-2 nights between Salzburg and Berlin
Looking for a enjoyable stop for 2 nights on the way to Berlin from Salzburg. It will be in late December, after Christmas, and we would really enjoy great scenery over a large city but are open to both.
We will be using public transport.
Primary interests would be winter activities outdoors rather than museums, good dining options, great walking or hiking. Ideally a spa/wellness resort with charm would be our first choice.
Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

Well, Salzburg meets your criteria very well - and also some other places nearby (e.g. Berchtesgaden, Ruhpolding).
I would fly from Berlin to Salzburg (Air Berlin offers flights @ €49) and spend the two nights in the region.
You did not specify your budget, but this hotel looks nice:

However, be aware that it will be VERY hard to find a hotel in a winter sports region after Christmas. This is peak season.

We arrive in Frankfurt and depart from Berlin, where we will stay from 28 Dec. til 1 Jan. That part is confirmed.
I did look at flights from Salzburg to Berlin and that is an option but we would prefer 4 nights in Salzburg, 2 in between and then 4 in Berlin.
I have been to the hotel you mention in Berchtesgaden to visit. It is lovely but we are not looking for remote location.
Thank you for responding. I have poring over maps, reading everything I can find on line for suggestions.

Just a few more specifics.
I know Nuremberg makes sense but we are not fond of it and have no wish to stay there.
We will be traveling using rail passes, already purchased so really prefer to stick to trains for our travels.

In the middle between Salzburg und Berlin there is the Thüringer Wald, a mountain chain with winter activities. The winter sports centre is Oberhof. Surrounding towns are Suhl and Ilmenau.
I like the Hotel Gabelbach near Ilmenau - it is a nice 4 star hotel with an interesting history (the GDR leaders used to stay here and Goethe wrote a famous poem on the adjacent mountain).

In Suhl, you find this one:

Or something completely different:

The hotels in winter activity regions are somewhat remote, of course. If you prefer more small town atmosphere look for Erfurt, Weimar and Eisenach. Eisenach has a gorgous castle (where Luther translated the Bible), Erfurt has a charming old town and Weimar is a classicist town.
