Where to sleep in Manchester?

I am holding a reservation for the Motel One Piccadilly in Manchester. I liked the Motel Ones I stayed in last year in Germany, and it is convenient for the train station. However, I understand that this area used to be dodgy at night, and had a shortage of good places to eat. Has it improved, or should I be looking somewhere else? Salford Quays and Castleford have been suggested.

Ok not sure what you will think of this but I love Velvet.

Boutique hotel in the gay district by the canal. If you don't like noise its best to ask for a higher room or one round the back. I always go for the one with the japanese screens.

Food is very decent and there is a small bar downstairs.

It is literally 2-3 minutes walk from the station.

Thanks for the reply. So you think the area around the station is OK?

(Lonely Planet thinks well of Velvet too, but I do have issues with noise, I need quiet to sleep.)

I think its fine - it will be potentially busy and noisy (especially if everyone is out enjoying the sun at the canalside tables), but if you request a room at the back you would have no issues (in my hotel)

Your hotel is very close by but just away from Canal St I think, so noise likely to be less of an issue. It's very very convenient, both for the station itself and just wandering into town and/or catching a tram. Worry not!

Thanks! The friend who expressed potential concerns said she was probably out of date.

It was Piccadilly Gardens which used to be dodgy. Don't know if it still is.

Thanks to you both.

I stayed in Motel Ones in Berlin and Bremen last year, and found them clean, comfortable, well designed and relatively cheap. None of the charm I imagine the Velvet offers, though.

There seem to be a lot of restaurants in the Piccadilly Gardens area, so maybe it got cleaned up.

Coronation Street and Weatherfield would be my first choice.

but seriously the train station area when I was there - Piccadilly Station anyway was right near the heart of town and within a short walk thus of plenty of good places to eat.

It did not appear to be the most scenic place in England - the station area - but typical large city look - busy place night and day however.
