Hello, We are travelling to Switzerland in July and will take a train to Wengen from Zurich where we land. While at Wengen, we do not plan to hire a car. After the stay at Wengen, we need to get to Saas Fee. We were planning to take a train to Interlaken and pick up a car from Avis but were just informed that the office there has shut down. Is Interlaken the best place for us to pick up the car, i.e.is it sort of on route to Saas Fee?
Thanks in advance for your help

Suggest you call Andy Bestor at Gemut. They can help you with your car rental. I also checked the AutoEurope website and they show 2 pick up points in Interlaken, but I can't tell what rental car company it might be.
You can reach Andy at 1-800-521-6722 ext. 1.
Sorry, I just realized that you might not be in the US. I'm assuming you could still rent a car through the AutoEurope website (www.autoeurope.com).
Hi DeepaSingapore,
I wonder if you know that Saas Fee is also car-free? It doesn't seem to make sense to hire a car just for a drive between Interlaken and Saas Fee, where it will simply sit.

Thanks Beetyk -yes was thinking about contacting AutoEurope.
Hi Swandav - I know it is car free but we will be based there for 3 nights and will be driving around from there. Thereafter, we have a couple of days outside Gruyeres, and then 3 days in Melchsee Frutt and then we drive back to Zurich. I think we will end up using the car a fair bit but will still use trains if they are much more convenient...just could not get to doing the whole holiday car free since we have never done it before and I think with the kids it offers some flexibility...
Hey again,
I do think you're going to be wonderfully surprised at how much fun and how convenient Swiss trains are. Folks who try them usually don't go back to cars.
Do you have the Swiss rail site to plan out your train trips? If not, it's at
www.rail.ch
Using trains as much as possible would also be better for that **great** and clean and fresh Swiss air -- !

Hello DeepaSingapore
Europcar has a location in Interlaken.

Happy travels!
Thanks so much swandav and swiss hiker. Any idea about which Swiss rail pass will suit us given our itinerary? Also, what sort of weather do we expect?
Many thanks
>Any idea about which Swiss rail pass will suit us given our itinerary?
In most cases the half fare card (99 Fr) + discounted single tickets do the job best. But you have to do the math yourself. See www.sbb.ch for detailed prices.
>Also, what sort of weather do we expect?
Well, it´s mountain weather - anything from hot sunny days to cool and rainy is possible. You should be change your plans on short notice to take advantage of the weather.
Altamiro, where do you get the half fare card for 99 francs? Our 2009 card cost 150. And that's the price currently shown on the SBB site when you try to buy one.
Passerine,
There is a one-month version of the HFC that costs 99 chf. It's sold in railstations throughout Switzerland as well as at
www.swisstravelsystem.com
