Where to go in Turkey

We were there in 2000 for just a week and loved it. We took a ferry from Rhodes to Marmaris and then took a bus south to Fethiye and Kalkan. Now we want to go back and I have 2 places I definitely want to visit - Istanbul and Cappodocia. However, we'd also like a third area to visit. I would like to see Ephesus, but to be honest, it's not on my list of must sees. I think ideally we'd like some time on a beach. I'm wondering about going south from Cappodocia, through Konya to Side, Antalya, that area. I don't think we'd rent a car (maybe a few days while in Cappodocia), but we'd mainly be relying on public transit. Any ideas on where to go?

Thanks.

There are some great beaches around Kusadasi and of course you can change your mind about Ephesus (which is very close). You really need to see Ephesus, it is marvellous.

I second seeing Ephesus. You can drive south from Kushadasi and hit some wonderful beaches.

Thanks. I probably didn't express myself very well in my original note. It wasn't specifically that I didn't want to see Ephesus - if we're there, we'd see it - and I know that's one of the major reasons to visit that coast. I'm concerned that it's very touristy in that area, and I think we might prefer something a little more low key. We absolutely loved Kalkan - if I could find a little town like that for a few days, I'd be quite happy.

Well, I've got lots of time to plan - we wouldn't be going until next summer, so the research will be fun.

If anyone has more ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks again.

Hi Susan,
Have you stayed in Villa Mahal in Kalkan ? If so we met there
Now I am in Cappadocia.
How long you want to stay during this holiday ?
Allow 3 days to Cappadocia and rent a car do drive down to south is a better option. While in Cappadocia its recommended to take daily tours and maybe one day on your own.
If you look for small town and do not want to go to Kalkan again, than Kas or Dalyan could be option or Gocek could be also considerable....
Best Regards,

Murat
Let me know if I may help you with your itinerary.

Mount Nemrut is an incredible place to visit. It should be one of the wonders of the ancient world, but its too far from the mediterannean so probably no one ever heard of it. I consider it to be equal to the pyramids for the simple reason that the pyramids, like all of the other official wonders, were built next to urban concentrations, with endless supplies of labor and material. Mt. Nemrut is out in the middle of nowhere, making the construction of its colossal statues and the tumulus all the more impressive.
