Where to go in Germany?

We have decided to "tear ourselves away" from visiting France and Italy and go to Germany next year. We like cities with museums, galleries, interesting architecture etc. Not interested in cruses, wine tours , villages.
Berlin would ,most likely, be our first choice (plus some side trips).
What part of Berlin would you recommend to stay in? We are not looking for hotels at this point - just some general information.
thanks

Berlin would not be my choice of cities for architecture since it has been completely rebuilt since the end of WWll. Munich would be my choice. It has everything you are looking for.

In 2005 my wife and I stayed at Askanisher Hof, reviewed in this article
http://www.economist.com/cities/disp...obj_id=2457743
Askanisher Hof is on Kurferstendamm, about a fifteen minute walk from the Kaiser Wilhelm church. The hotel was quiet, the price was reasonable, and it was easy to take a bus to the transportation nexus at the Zoo railroad station and to go from there anywhere we liked. This was our second visit to Berlin. We liked the museums, particularly the Pergamon Museum and the Neue Nationalgalerie, the local art scene, and the Jewish Museum. It's not our favorite city in Europe, but it's worth a visit.

I would have to agree with Curious, based on the fact that you are "tearing yourselfes away" from France and Italy, you might be a bit disappointed with Germany if Berlin is your first destination there. It is a city to see, however it is an ecclectic mix, sometimes not very nice, of old, modern, western, eastern styles and everything in between. To make the transition between Italy and France more bearable, Munich might be a better first choice. It has a wonderful flair and great arichtecture and is not a "modern" city like Berlin. Also, the Bavarian country side is very beautiful and has several castle museums when you want to break away from downtown. Enjoy your stay in Germany!

You should stay in the "Mitte" (Berlin central part). Berlin is a very big city, but the public transport is very good. if you are near a bus station, or a metro one, you will be ok. We mostly used the bus, our apartment was near line 200, which take you to the most important sites. also used the tram.
It was our second visit there (the previous one was in 1975, in East Berlin).
There are a lot of very interesting museums, there are some historical parts also. You can take some walking tours in English, tolearn more about the Berlin during the Third Reich, or about Red Berlin.
A beautiful day trip is to Potsdam. there are so many things to visit there: San Soucci, Neue Palast, Orangerie, etc.
An year ago we spent five days in Berlin and even this was our second visit, we felt that we could remain there for some more days.

Munich has all the things you like. I also like Regensburg, Bamberg, and Meersburg for wonderul architecture. I also like places like Nurnberg and Augsburg. I've never really liked Berlin much. Just my opnion.

"We like cities with museums, galleries, interesting architecture etc. Not interested in cruses, wine tours , villages"

Have you ever thought about visiting Ruhrgebiet, i.e. the city sprawl Duisburg - Essen - Bochum - Dortmund?
