It's our 10 year anniversary this Fall and we are staying with DH's parents in Glasgow, Scotland for about a month. They're going to watch our young children for 3-4 days so we're can take a short plane trip on our own as a couple. (This will be our first trip as a couple since they were born, so I'm very excited.) We will be flying out from Glasgow Airport.

I haven't traveled in way too long, so I want to max my wanderlust experience and go to a country in Europe I've never been. (I've been to France, Italy, Sweden, and all over the UK.)

DH likes the idea of Prague and I do too, but any other suggestions would be very helpful.. We only really began talking about this last night.

Well for me personally, Venice or Paris would be my choices for a long weekend . . . but since you want a different country I think Prague would be terrific.

I would pick Paris - but if you've already done it perhaps you don;t want to.

Or you might do something completely different and go for Alsace/Strasbourg - which with Colmar and the wine road can be very romantic. Or perhaps Salzburg - which I adore and the nearby countryside. Assuming you want a relaxing trip and not a sightseeing whirl around.

If you want a romantic trip, then Venice. If you don't want to go to Italy, then the Basque country in Spain. Great food and scenery, wonderful cities.

I find Prague very romantic. A stroll along the bridge Charles over the Vltava is quite romantic. And the city has bcome vibrant.

What makes a trip "romantic"?

- Is it a nightly stroll through narrow alleys in a historic town, when the rain makes the web cobblestone shimmer in the light of the gaslamps?

- Or is it walking over crushing gravel pathways in the park of a castle hotel before withdrawing in your room, decorated with period furniture?

- Or is it rowing a boat slowly across a calm lake under a sky gleaming with sunset colours?

In the first case, you can go to any historical city in Europe - there are several hundreds of them which are good for romantic strolls.

Most castle hotels are outside of cities, in the "romantic" countryside, but some are in city centres. Do not always look for the obvious - often the gems are not where the tourist hordes go. E.g. the little town Carmona is much more charming than nearby Sevilla which is choked by mass tourism. Or one the most romantic Spanish castle hotels is in Oropesa (where??? - it is near Madrid and over-touristy Toledo).

In the third case, a country hotel would fill the bill. Also, hundreds of options - requires a bit of research.

What about Reykjavik. Summertime would be fantastic there and it is a direct 2h20m flight from Glasgow. I think renting a car and a spa visit to the blue lagoon would be pretty wonderful and I think a lot less crowded in July than a visit to Venice.

Prague is a good choice. But we'd fly non-stop from Edinburgh to Istanbul.

jpie - the OP is travelling "this Fall", not July. Iceland is colder, darker and wetter then (though some go for the chance of seeing the Northern Lights).

Venice / Paris / Prague / Budapest / Barcelona / Vienna / Rome all good choices with direct connection from GLA.

Since both of you like the idea of Prague, being there for an anniversary will make the city even more special.

We are big fans of Prague, so consider my comments with that in mind. We have visited the city in all four seasons and in all kinds of weather, and no matter the season, strolling back to a Stare Mesto hotel after a delicious meal (there are terrific French restaurants in Prague, by the way) is romantic to us. We've walked the dog in the early morning hours of one winter visit across the Charles Bridge when the morning sky was striped purple, blue, and orange and thought it romantic. In the fall, a visit to Vsyehrad to soak in the autumn-colored views of Prague could be romantic, as well.

I'm fond of Iceland, but I would never consider it the slightest bit romantic, especially at that time of year.

I too like Prague, but it can be rather crowded. Depending on when during the autumn, I'd also look at Barcelona, Andalusia (Seville would be my pick,) the Italian lakes, or - even though both are in France - Provence/Cote d'Azur or Alsace. Or look for someplace in the Veneto close to - but not inside - Venice, which you could visit as a day trip.

Look at both the Glasgow and Edinburgh airport websites (glitchy Fodor's won't let me put in the urls here for some reason) which both have screens showing nonstop destinations served.
