Hi, I am currently new here but I am currently spending a month in Budapest and want a two day trip somewhere. I was curious about Vienna but having traveled there already and throughout a lot of Hungary. I want to have a two day experience in another city in another country without long seven hour train or bus journeys. Could anyone possibly help and recommend some ideas for me please?
Regards.

Jonny: I would choose to rent a car and drive straight north from Budapest into Slovakia and the resorts in the High Tatras (about a 5 hour ride)..spend the night at the Grand Hotel in Stary Smokevec (indoor swimming pool and good restaurant on premises)..a giant dowager of a hotel from the 19th century...an unusual experience...see pix of Slovakia.
At this time of year, there'll be plenty of snow, but in my experience I found that the Slovaks do a good job of clearing the major highways into the Tatras. There's not much traffic on Slovakian roads, generally, and the road will be divided a good part of the way. Several inviting towns and villages along the way...and there's a short cut (if clear) from Banska Bystrica through Brezno (Hwy 66)..but it only saves about 20 kms...). The snow covered mountains will be quite a scenic beauty this time of year.

I agree with Stu that Slovakia is a good destination, although I'd consider Levoca as well as/instead of Stary Smokevec (see http://wilhelmswords.com/eur2006/index.html - Slovakia - Who Knew? )
However, have you explored other parts of Hungary? If you go south there are great Art Nouveau buildings in Pecs, Szeged and Kecskemet, and you could go over the border to Serbia to Subotica if you have to add a country. That's only a couple of hours by train. (Start here: http://mytimetotravel.wordpress.com/2012/01/25/pecs/ )
