Where to from Verona

We will be spending a few days traveling around Verona and then driving to Lerici and Lucca for a few days. We have one free night between Verona and Lerici. Need suggestions on where to spend the night between the two. We will have most of two days to explore. Thanks.

Nothing wrong with Padua or Bergamo, but they're a bit out of the way and not on the route you're taking. If you were going to head off in another direction, as you would have to do with Padua, I would also recommend Vicenza.

Towns on the way: Modena or Parma.
Cities on the way: Bologna or Florence.
