Where to eat on 9 hour layover in london
We have a 9 hour layover in London (heathrow). I did this a few years ago- took the tube to Westminster and (since my kids barely remember it) thinking about doing it again. The last time we did it, we couldn't decide on where to eat and ended up going back to airport to eat (those sandwiches were delicious though). This time would love your help! We want something budget friendly and I've heard london has delicious shawerma (Arabic food). Any suggestions (including how to get there)? The last time, my kids were free on the tube. This time I'm wondering how much a tube ticket costs? I recall getting an oyster ticket the last time. Thanks!

It is limited time but not too less. What time of the day will you be landing? Asking so you're factoring peak hour tube traffic etc..
Since you mentioned Shawrama - Edgware road has a lot of good Shawrama shops. It's on the Bakerloo (Brown) line so you can change at Piccadilly (this is the tube line that you will take from Heathrow) and I think it's only a few stops. You can also get off at Piccadilly and walk (be about 15 minutes. You will be able to see Marble Arch and Hyde Park isnt too far if you wanted to see that quickly before going back to the airport.

With such a short time, I wouldn't want to head to Edgware Rd but that is the location for many ethnic restaurants, primarily Middle Eastern. It would take me much longer than 15 minutes to walk there from Picadilly but I am neither young nor fit.
To see more of London, if that's your primary goal, I'd get off at Picadilly and walk toward Leicester Sq then on toward Covent Garden--thinking of what the kids would enjoy.
You'll pass loads of restaurants, but there are none in the reasonable price range that I can highly recommend. From Covent Garden you can walk over to Trafalgar Sq then down Whitehall to the river, Houses of Parliament, the Abbey. However, after Trafalgar Sq, the restaurants are thin on the ground.
Or, at any point, you could take the tube to Edgware Rd for your specific food hunt.

Arriving at 7am means that you won't be clear of immigration/customs etc till at least 8:30am and not into central London till 9:30am. You could get caught in the rush hour unless this is a weekend. Flying out at 5pm means that you'll have to be back at the airport for 3pm, leaving London at 2pm.
Allowing for a wander around before eating and you won't have long to do so, it sounds like an early lunch or a late breakfast and where to go depends on what you want and where you get into London. If you've just come off an overnight flight you might not feel like much of either, but I'd go for Haz in the city. It's a Turkish restaurant and has never failed us in recent years.

The Delaunay is another suggestion, all day dining, like Brasserie Zedel. I haven't been to the Delaunay but it's on my list. Have been couple times to Zedel and like it.
