Where To Eat Christmas Dinner in Salzburg

I need some good suggestions on where I should eat dinner on Christmas in Salzburg. I need to go ahead and make reservations. I am looking for something traditional, or with a nice atmosphere.

Thanks for the help in advance

Have you asked your hotel for recommendations? They are the most likely to know what will be open.

I have yet to choose a hotel. When I do however, I will ask them too.

A few years ago, we had a nice formal christmas dinner at the Hotel Sacher which has a terrace overlooking the river. It is a very well renovated grand-style hotel in Salzburg.

Another traditional place for christmas dinner is at the Goldener Hirsch hotel restaurant which has curving ceiling arches. It was just featured in a christmas travel article so we couldn't even reserve two weeks in advanced.

"St Peters-Keller" located behind St Peter's church also had a special christmas outdoor festivities with gluhwein & wandering musicians in traditional costumes inside their front decorated courtyard. We didn't have a reservation so couldn't enter the restaurant but were able to join the gluhwein & music festivities on the 23rd. Food was decent when we went back to eat there a few days later.

"Alt Salzburg" is a traditional gourmet restaurant where you can dine inside a large cave in the back of the restaurant. Their service was most attentive of all the restaurants we've been in Salzburg.

"Zum Eulenspiegel" is a narrow restaurant that has a great traditional ambiance and a very crowded bar downstairs. You climb the small stairway for their standard but good traditional fare served in the five floors above the bar. Service is a bit hectic as the waiters climb up & down between floors.

You're welcome! In retrospect, I would choose Goldener Hirsch or St. Peterskeller as first choice for an austrian christmas dinner. We like Zum Eulenspiegel because it has a cozy bar/great location to meet up after the eight of us split up in the oldtown maze. Food was not as special but ambiance was nice. The christmas market is spread throughout oldtown but mostly in front of the Dom/cathedral. It has a much better atmosphere than the market in Munich.
