Where to celebrate significant birthday (Berlin base)
We have travelled a fair amount in Germany, but have never made it to Berlin, a deficit we will remedy this October. Our trip time frame includes my birthday -- ahem-0. We will have DBahn passes, so we can go anywhere, and my partner assures me cost is a consideration but not a constraint (whatever that means). We would be looking for good food, spa and walking opportunities, and probably someplace in the country as a counterpoint to urban Berlin. Any thoughts?

Meissen has a beautiful center - - loads of charm - - it escaped allied bombing. A perfect little idyll. It has some "spa hotels".

You could also go for one of the spas at the Baltic sea. I think Heiligendamm is the poshest (the G8 meeting was there a few years aggo).

Thanks dfourh. Meissen is a nice thought; we spent some time in Dresden on a recent trip and really liked it. Might look for something a little different this time. Hans, Baltic is a great idea--we got to the coast on a Baltic cruise a few years ago, but didn't want to do the 6 hour round trip to visit Berlin for a couple of hours, so we kicked around Warnemunde and Rostock for a very enjoyable day. That was June, October might be different! We are also looing at Lubeck and Heidelberg. Fun to consider the options, and more are welcome.

Hans, thank you so much for your suggestion of the Heiigendam, we are here now recovering from a busy week in Berlin. We love it, it is a unique experience. We will be in Heidelberg on Sunday and Monday, I would like to buy you a beer or coffee to thank you for this great idea if you are keeping up with this post.
