Where to buy Venice mask?
My daughter would like to buy a mask in Venice. We're hoping to avoid tourist-only shops, though she wouldn 't be able to afford something truly high end. We'll be in Venice in in just over a week. Any suggestions for where she might look? Thanks!

Venice is such a tourist city, it might be hard to avoid tourist-only shops. Masks are such a symbol of Venice, they are everywhere, on every corner, and from every street vendor. Wander some of the back streets as far as possible from St. Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge area-the farther you get away from these tourist hotspots, the greater likelihood of finding something more authentic.
We stayed in the Cannaregio area, a more residential location near the Jewish Ghetto, and there were numerous mask only shops there. Though I wasn't really shopping for one, I did look at them, and they seemed very expensive. Not sure how one would pack for travel either. Happy shopping!

I think it is better to go to specific addresses that you have reason to believe make authentic quailty masks in Venice, and don't import them cheaply from foreign countries.
This article is old, so you should spend a little time googling up the addresses to see if the places are still open:

I second Mondo Novo from the above post. While I bought a mask at another shop years ago, my husband and I came upon this shop and realized he was the Maestro featured on the Travel Channel one time. My husband, in his broken Italian, had a good conversation with him. He does not speak English; only German and Italian. We bought a copy of the poster that you can see in front of the store in the picture at his website, and it hangs in our home office to remind of us of a very nice visit with him. I don't remember what the prices were like, but he is a real mask artist, not just a souvenir mask maker, so I doubt they are very inexpensive.

Hi beeswing,
We stayed in the San Polo area near Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari church. Around in that area we stumbled upon a mask maker. He was making a mask in front of us. It was very interesting. He was very kind and explained all the steps involved. These were for real. Not mass produced in a factory somewhere. The masks in the shop were varied and beautiful. I would say to look for a type of shop like that to be sure they are authentic.

This shop is near the Academia and has wonderful, unique masks (along with the more traditional)

We were in Venice for Carnivale in 2011 - I said I'd buy a mask if one spoke to me - well this one grabbed me by the collar and yelled! We were amazed at how many people stopped me to ask for a picture of the mask.
