I've stayed twice at the Auberge Saint-Pierre and I'd recommend it. You can walk right out onto the ramparts from the back of the hotel and they had a huge buffet breakfast. I haven't read any reviews but if the complaints are about small rooms or narrow stairs then then those have no merit since the buildings on the Mont are hundreds of years old. The hotel prices are expensive but that's not unexpected either because of its unique location. Anyway, I'll give a vote for the Auberge Saint-Pierre.

The hotels are dingy and overpriced. The restaurants are worse. That said, it's worth staying over just to see it after the crowds leave. Strongly suggest bringing a picnic dinner and bottle of wine.

We did it and I can't say it was "worth it." Walked to the top and even heard a concert but still, everything that Fra Diavolo says is about hotels being overpriced, dingy and having bad restaurants is true. The other thing is that being on the Mont, you can't see the Mont. For all of those reasons I think that staying in a nearby hotel, with views of the Mont, (certainly cheaper and nicer than staying in those on the Mont), makes more sense.

Hi BOZIETX,
I have not stayed "on" MSM, but tend to agree with Fra and Julie. We stayed at one of the hotels (Mercure, I think) at the end of the peninsula which affords a great view of the mount at all times of day. The trolley/conveyance which brought us across to MSM was a short walk from our door. Also, the hotels include parking which is important.
I was there a few years ago before the new bridge (or whatever it is, was finished) so things might have changed. I also noticed several folks lugging their suitcases from the trolley/conveyance up to the hotels on the mount- didn't look like much fun. I hope that someone who has been there more recently can give you better info.
MSM is spectacular so enjoy...

Last winter, I got a great rate at the Mercure in the hotel zone on the mainland and stayed there. The free shuttle stops right in front, and there are also a lot more dining options than on the Mont itself -- including a small supermarket.

I loved staying on the Mont itself, but it can be very crowded even till the evening. Still, there is something magical that takes place at night when the crowds die down and before they start to arrive en masse in the morning.
We also stayed in the Auberge St-Pierre, with a view looking up to the abbey. I had wanted a view of the water but a scheduling error had us facing in. I loved the very close up view of the abbey from our window.
Yes, the room is basic and small and the food is not worth it. I can see why many say that it's better to see the view from afar -- I'm sure it's spectacular. However, walking the ramparts in the evening and being in the abbey without crowds was wonderful.

Well, here is the report I made about my last trip. It might help you decide whether you want to be on the Mont at night.

If you want to see the Mont "from a distance" then all you have to do is walk about 100 meters off the Mont and then you see it in all it's glory in full view and not just as a blip on the horizon. I really didn't have any problem with the food there. Sure, it's not great but it certainly wasn't awful and is about the same price you'd pay for any touristy restaurant in Paris. You can always take the shuttle and eat at one of the restaurants on the mainland if you want and if you'll have a car then you're free to dine anywhere.
I didn't find my room in Auberge Saint-Pierre dingy at all and I had a room overlooking the bay, which I loved. The best part about staying there is having it to yourself at night after the tourists have gone and being able to walk around all the little alleys and finding hidden terraces with great views over the bay. Yes, you can take the shuttle until about 1AM back to the mainland but then you can't just walk in and out of your room at will any time. If you want to see some photos of my last overnight stay there so you can see what it looks like at night and then first thing in the morning when you wake up then click on the link below:

I would gladly spend a third night on the Mont if the opportunity ever presented itself. I love it there.
