After a few days in Norfolk near Thornham we'll be driving to Dover for an evening ferry to Oostende, Belgium. I'm thinking of stopping for a few hours in either Lavenham or Canterbury but Lavenham seems to be winning out partially because it seems less complicated to drive into? We love gardens and historic places. What do you recommend? What about something else along the way? Thanks.

We lived in that part of England for six years. Forget Lavenham. The only place to stop is Cambridge. King's College Chapel--the most beautiful building (interior) in the world; cappucino at the Copper Kettle just across the street, walking along the backs beside the River Cam. Nothing else in England matches it! You can park in the Lion Yard multi-story car park. Follow the signs.

Cambridge is well worth a visit as is Canterbury, but for me you are correct. Avoid all the hassle of car parking, crowds etc and visit Lavenham. Super little village, have a few pints in the Swan or the Bull and then a short walk (stagger) round the village to look at some of the cottages and interesting buildings such as the Guildhall (16th Cent) and the 14th cent Little Hall. There are over 300 listed buildings in this village.
Have a good (and peaceful) trip

Hi Adina...

I recommend stopping off for your few hours to Leeds Castle. I just went Thursday to do some research for my next newsletter, and I was gobsmacked! It is absolutely brilliant.

The castle is on an island in the middle of a lake, and the grounds are breathtaking, even if you aren't into gardens. There are lovely shops, a maze, vinyard, gardens and a duckery, to start with!

The article on Leeds Castle, if you are interested in more details, will be published in my 19 May newsletter, as will the accompanying pictures on the web site. If you want to sign up, you may do so on my web site.

Have a great time, no matter what you choose!

Anastasia
