where should i stay as a home base in south of france

I can't figure out where to stay.
this is what we want for the month we are there....
- small town (midievil would be so nice, but they are usually too touristy or to far from the beach, or too sleepy)
- some night life and good restaurants/bars
- close to mountains and beach

I am thinking about Villefranche, but its not really medieval, and old town Antibes is too big, no? Haute de Cagnes is so nice, but 20 mins from the beach and probably sleepy.

These are my dilemmas.....
