Where is a good place or area to purchase local art in Barcelona?

I am not talking about famous paintings or anything like that. I am just looking to purchase a painting from local artists in the area.

gosh >...I wish I could remember the exact street.

In any case, you will run into various shops in the gothic quarter neighborhood. Many of those sell paitings and other arts from local artists.

Las Ramblas - The street is full of artists, florists, bird vendors, street performers, you name it. They're all there every afternoon.

On the public squares in the Barri Gotic, like near the Cathedral, artists will often be out selling their wares. Be prepared to bargain on prices.

It depends on what you want. Las Rambles is sure to offer the work of street artists and sometimes these can be quite good. I have to say, that I did not like Las Rambles and was very happy when we had seen it and I could leave. It seemed to me that most of the stuff there was mass produced, (probably in China). Not that there's anything wrong with that. I bought a "Gaudish" soapdish for my bathroom that a million other tourist must have also.
I found one of my favorite pieces of art in the Eixample just off the Avinguda Diagonal. There were a few unique galleries and shops that had wonderful selections.

BTW- I did not go to this place but I'm checked my guidebook from that trip and saw that I highlighted a gallery:
Sala Pares
Petrixol 5
Metro: Placa de Catalunya
Phone 93-318-70-20
The Frommer's 2000 book says that they have local art "Displayed in a two-story ampitheater...Exhibitions of the most avant-garde art in Barcelona change about every 3 weeks"
(How did I miss this place?!! Next time)

Have a wonderful trip.

I've seen quite an interesting gallery on C/Moncada (the street of the Picasso Museum).
Also, in Gracia there's plenty of workshops of 'real' artists, meaning, not the ones selling paintings of Barcelona views. Just wander around the small streets of Gracia somewhere around 7, 8 pm and enjoy the little shops, walk in an art work shop if the door is open, enjoy a drink on one of the many squares.
