where in paris is equivilent to the picadilly circus area??

When in london I always stay near picadilly circus area because it is in the middle of the shopping of oxford, bond and regent street and within walking distance to knightsbride (if i am in a walking mood). It is also near all the movie theaters of leicster square. resturants are plenty at that area. Any area in paris that I can stay in that is like that?

I guess that would be one choice (Opera). I also think the place de la Madeleine area could fit that description (noting that these two areas are only about 4-5 blocks apart). The Madeleine is a little closer to the Champs-Elysees, Louvre, the Tuileries, etc. Both are near the large dept. stores on bd Haussmann and there are plenty of other stores and movie theaters around there. There seem to be plenty of restaurants any where in central Paris from my point of view. Madeleine has the advantage of several good gourmet food stores which also serve some meals (not sure about Hediard, but I think Fauchon serves lunch and small meals).

The Opera Garnier is in the SW corner of the 9th -- the place de la Madeleine is right nearby, just across the border of the 9th to the SW and is in the 8th arrondisement. The Opera metro stop itself is just south of the actual Opera Garnier building and is again across another border and is the 2nd. So you could look for hotels in either the 9th or 2nd for the Opera area, and probably the 8th for the Madeleine (although the 2nd is not far).
