Born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. Spent on year in Eugene, Oregon and have been living in Seattle since 1979.
Many people only think Scandinavians when the hear Minnesota -- and, to be sure, there are plenty there -- but, interestingly, Minnesota also has quite a bit of French influence, due, in large part, to the French and French-Canadian voyageurs who explored that area. The state motto of Minnesota is French, the very beautiful "L'Etoile du Nord" (The Star of the North) and four main streets in downtown Minneapolis all have French names: Hennepin (after Father Louis Hennepin; Minneapolis is also in Hennepin County), Nicollet (after Jean Nicollet, an explorer, translator, and negotiator born in Normandy), LaSalle (after French explorer Robert de la Salle), and Marquette (after French missionary and explorer Jacques Marquette).
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa, after marrying moved to Orlando, Fl, then Dallas,Tx, back to Pgh, then to southfield, MI, then we decided we'd had enough of cold weather and snow after living in South and west for so long and moved back to Maitland,Fl, a suburb of Orlando. And fortunately home to an international airport !!
Like Capo, born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. Interesting info about MN Capo!
I spent one year in Spain during college and spent three years in the Dominican Republic before moving to New York City.
Ahhhhhhhhhh Capo -- but you didn't mention the MN "state bird"
I didn't realize how many non_americans were on this board. Very very cool. Born in western Mass, grew up in Hawaii and have lived here in Portland, OR for about 20 years.
great string mimi

This is much more of a multi-cultural group than I had thought, and so much the better!
I'm in Alexandria, VA, 9-10 months of the year, and the rest in the Dordogne. Hoping to reverse that equation in the not too distant future.
Hi Mimi, I was born in a small town in Leicestershire but now live, (and have done for the past 30 years), in Hampshire about eight miles from Winchester and close to the New Forest, a lovely part of England.
Born and raised in rural Huntingdon, Pa., school and work in Lancaster, Pa, New York City, married, school and work in Philly, then to Danville, Pa., Virginia Beach, Va. and now back to central Pa. Judy
Mimi, great post!! I posted something similar a few months back called: "What do you do for a living and how much vacation/holiday time do you get?" I also got some great replies. As for me.., born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. Moved around to Orlando, FL, San Francisco, CA, New York, NY and now back in Philadelphia, PA. Funny how we end up back where we started a lot of times.
Danny, not all of us move back. I wouldn't move back to the western NY area for anything in the world. Beautiful in spring, summer and fall, but they can keep that snow and cold in winter! :-0
Born in Michigan (lots of us out there, eh?)
Spent time (from six months to years and years) in:

Would love to live in Sorrento.
Deborah and Capo is it true there are two seasons in Minneapolis/St. Paul: winter and road construction?
J
I live in Fairview Heights in southwestern Illinois, about 15 miles from St. Louis. When I travel I always say I'm from St. Louis, because if you mention Illinois, everyone assumes you live near Chicago (it's 260 miles from me). I've been to London more times than I've been to Chicago!
Joanne,
No, that's Michigan! (We're in "orange barrel", or non-construction season right now!)
BC
Hi Cindy, StCirq, and ALW--We're practically neighbors, living in--or just outside of--D.C. Hope to meet you at one of Monica's "D.C. Fodorites" get-togethers, either this month or later this fall.
Nancy:
What are Monica's DC get-togethers? Never heard of them, but would love to meet you all. Wendy's in DC, too, and she's a lot of fun!
JOdy: You are a "neighbor". I live in Downtown Orlando and my office in on Park Avenue in Winter Park (or as the locals pronounce it...Wintah Pah-k)
Born in Ohio, like the majority of people who live in Florida.
hi, you all.
I have lived since I was born some years ago in Sevilla, Spain.
Born in providence, RI. Live in Newton, Mass (Boston suburb)
Born and raised in South Jersey (12 miles outside of Philly). Married and moved to central Ohio 30 years ago (I was about 10 when I married...)
Born in Canada but have lived most of my life in Rhode Island.
I am posting here because I think telling one's age invites assumptions. I am from the old school, where no one asks one's age and you will most likely be receptive to whoever. And, oh yes, I forgot, I am from Conn.
At this point of the this thread - does anybody still care or read this far? Allright, I live in a van down by the river.
Born in Brooklyn, lived in southeastern Pa. and various parts of NJ, now live in central NJ.
Great question, Mimi--
Born in Bay Shore, Long Island, NY, raised in Babylon and West Islip.

Thanks for asking!
Born and raised in Rio Grande do Sul, southeast of Brazil.
Lived 2 years in São Paulo, Brazil.
Now living in Boston, MA, and almost melting with the heat wave here!
Have been living for many years in South Florida...now living right by the ocean near Hollywood, FL (not too far from Ft. Lauderdale)
Born in Vaqncouver, but grew up in Toronto (eh?).
For the last 24 years I have lived in the middle of nowhere, a.k.a. the armpit of heck.
Actually, I live in Thompson, Manitoba, a small mining town in the north of Manitoba. If you like outdoor sports (canoeing, snowmobiling, 4-wheeler ATV, hunting, fishing, etc.) it is ideal. US residents come 1500 miles to visit here, at the end of the paved roads, and beyond. I enjoy cross country skiing, and down-hill skiing at -20C, but my preferred travelling is civilization - New York, London, Paris; and we are heading for Italy next month. This is an area where the town is only 40 years old (before that, wilderness) and the nearest big city (Winnipeg)treasures its oldest buildings from 1900 as a unique treasure. It is great visiting an area where evidence of civilization goes back millenia, and the "new" buildings are from the 1700's.
Another European here: I was born in Turku, Finland and live now in Espoo (right next to Helsinki).
.. and another one!
Born and raised in Basel. Lived in Paris, London and Florence now settled down in Zurich, Switzerland.
Hyvaa huomentaa, Katja. I was born in Helsinki too but left when really little.
Finnish is beyond me now, although I will always be proud of my birth country. (Cool...highest per capita internet usage.)
My parents were academes and their work took our family to South America, where I spent my childhood. After research years in many countries and summers in Europe, Dad took a tenured position at....K.U.!
A nice progressive college town, but I still craved the exotic so I escaped to college in Hawaii....and stayed. It's lovely here. Katja, if your travels ever bring you to Hawaii, let me know. BTW I have cousins in Helsinki and Porvoo. Hyvaa paiva, aloha and choos!
Kalena...Lucky you live Hawaii! I lived there for ten years - it is still in my blood...
I was born in Lincoln, Nebraska and lived there for six whole months.
Now I live in Worthington, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus.
Hi Mimi, I too am an New Englander, living in Derry, N.H.
Jody and Nancy, We're all neighbors, I live in South Orlando near Florida Mall.
Have been here 33 years. Came from Ohio.
Born and raised in the Detroit metro area, college too.
After spending the last several years working in the San Francisco, CA Bay area we moved to Colorado last fall. Starting to think of moving back to Michigan to be near all our family... For now I'm enjoying the skiing and natual beauty of Colorado.
Born in Stuttgart, (when it use to be know as) West Germany - my father was in the Air Force. Grew up in Tampa, Florida and moved to NYC when I was 25. I hope to work / live abroad for a few years of my life - in Central Europe.
Hello everybody!
Another European speaking:
I was born, raised and still live in Greece (up in the north).
Hi Deborah. Very nice to make the acquaintence of another St. Paulite! (You may know this already, but I forgot to mention St. Paul's "French Connection". St. Paul was originally called "Pig's Eye", taking its name from Pierre "Pig's Eye" Parrant, a French-Canadian trapper and whiskey trader who moved a group of squatters to a river landing near Fort Snelling in the 1800s. The name changed in 1841 when another Frenchman, a French priest named Father Lucien Galtier, built a log chapel to honor St. Paul.)
Sally, are you implying my sense of humor is akin to the name of the Minnesota state bird? :~)
Joanne, that's funny; there's a similar joke out here in Seattle, about there being four seasons: fall, winter, spring, and road construction. When we were in Sorrento this past April, we met a woman from New York named Nancy Robinson who runs the Grace Gallery in the old part of Sorrento. She told us she fell in love with Sorrento on a visit and vowed one day to return there to live. If you're interested, check out her website at: http://www.gracegallery.it/
So nice to see that people at this site are from many countries. Usually I visit The Lonely Planet and that seems to be mainly Aussies.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Moved to Jacksonville, Florida at age 15. Spent four years of college in central Pennsylvania (Penn State). Have been back in Jacksonville for the past few years and am SO ready to move on!
I live in Thunder Bay,Ontario,Canada. And what a great place to live.
Mimi,
what a cool thread, everyone wants to say something, but more importantly, everyone wants to read each others' story. Well spotted.
I'm from Sydney, and have been stuck in Frankfurt for two years, after Bielefeld, Hannover and London.
It would be really cool for people to be able to ask others where to go and what to do in a given city or town - if they give their consent.
You have mine.
Happy travelling
Peter
Born in San Fracisco, grew up across the Bay in Berkeley and Oakland, lived there and nearby in Santa Cruz until six years ago...been in Manhattan for the past six years and at least four more. Eventually will move back to the Bay Area, though.
Born in Joplin, Missouri
Raised in Boston, Massachusetts
Now living in Alexandria, Virginia just outside of Washington, D.C.
Just the reverse of Caitlin. Born in New York, New York. Grew up in Pennsylvania, uni in D.C., lived a long time in Chicago then LA and now Palo Alto. Don't know where I want to end up, but for sure, somewhere in California. Lived a bit in Barrow in Furness, northern England!! Husband has close relatives in Tuscany so that feels like a second home.
Born in Mexico but lived in the Windy City (Chicago) all my life.
For Peter from Sidney: I think that is wonerful but if someone does not give their true email like you and I do, than it is hit and miss when the thread goes to the bottom. I don't have a printer but some posters have been very generous sending me printouts. And this is a good time to thank them. They know who they are. I woill not name them because I don't want to promote a buddy clubby atmosphere and want to make all new comers to the site feel welcome, because I had problen
ms here in the beginning. Everyone who has responded to this site has been so loving, eager when you read all
This has been a wonderful response from people who really CARE about other people, which enriches their travel experiences. And for you ,
PETER FROM SIDNEY-the idea is great but is someone does not give their real email address like we do, than you must wait for a post and it may sink to the bottom.I am going this weekend to see two Koala bears on tempoary laon to our Museum. I will think of you.
Born, raised and live in Long Island,
New York, but I can't wait to see Europe,Israel,Egypt,Alaska,Hawaii, California and Colorado
What's this got to do with travel? and who cares? ????
Capo:
Thank you for the internet site. Scanned it quickly and will most certainly go back and browse it more thoroughly. Recognized several places in Sorrento in the photos.
I remember once years ago on our way to a dog show (we used to show Afghan Hounds) in Mt. Baker we passed through Seattle. We stopped for gas and it was pouring rain. One of the locals commented that we were a day late and missed it, summer was yesterday!
Doubt my dream of living in Sorrento will ever come to pass. Young in spirit but I'm afraid we are too old to make such a move. We certainly will go there at every opportunity though!!
J
Well the thread went a long way before the unpleasantness hit!
And we can all see who it came from, naturally it would be her

Hey, Bjorn,
Where do you really live?
I have been on a rampage and raping since age six. It is somthing in our water.
Let's get back on track here!
Born and spent childhood in Melbourne, Australia. Lived a short time in Hamburg, Germany. Then lived Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and am back in Sydney (for good we hope!).
Los Angeles (Culver City really) then Oregon, then LA again, then Oregon again (ALW - Beavers & Ducks both ranked? Are we dreaming?) then San Francisco, then Seattle, then Edinburgh and points Euro, then Alaska, then Seattle. I will need a couple of extra lifetimes in order to live everywhere I'd like. Also more money. Can anyone help?
I'm amazed by the number of non-Americans on this website - it's great to see such a broad community represented on this board! I myself am born and still living in (gulp!) NJ, the only U.S. state that continues to draw laughs and groans (though quite lovely if you get out of the Newark Airport area!!)
Are you for sale???????????????
Born in New Jersey. raised in Metuchen N.J. near Highland Park N.J. Which is another town I also lived in for 5 years in the mid to late 70's. I miss Greasy Tony's in New Brunswick, N.J!! Hi there Mimi, and everyone else who has replied. What a great bunch of people. I was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. A beautiful city Im very proud to call home. Good luck to all... Happy Travelling

Hi Mim,
Lived awhile in liverpool, when the romance was over, it was back here to NYC.
Born in Russia, adopted by Americans. Left my broken heart in San Francisco. Now I live in recovery in Chicago.
I am posting here because that bio thread is too elitist. My class status and my age should not be a concern. I came to this site for travel insights not to join a who can we put down today club. sleepless in Seattle
From North Bay, Ontario, Canada.....about a 3 1/2 drive north of Toronto. A small city of 55,000 situated on the shores of Lake Nipissing some 30 Km (20 miles long) and known for its great pickerel fishing.
Worked in San Francisco, Portugal and England.......love my slow-pace home-town and my last trip was to Russia for three weeks.
Sorry.......that`s a 3 1/2 HOUR drive north of Toronto.
Sorry, I fell asleep, where were we?
A fascinating thread! I was born in Chicago, grew up in Detroit and in Bloomington, Indiana; educated in Detroit, Bloomington, Baton Rouge, LA and Oxford UK; chose Covington, LA as my retirement home when I reached that age and love it. (Yes, it's hot and sticky but the food is magnificent!)
I live in Salt Lake City. I visit San Francisco several times a year--my home away from home.
Hi everyone,
I am a true blue Malaysian and I live in Kuala Lumpur.
Interesting to see what a group we are! In my 'first life,' was a born and raised Chicagoan -- a true city rat, not suburbs, living on the northside, first near Lincoln Park/Old Town and later a few miles north. Five and a half years ago, we tossed over the city life and headed for the country - now live in rural northeast Wisconsin and love it.
Winnie, where is Kuala Lumpar, my geography, as you cansee, also spelling is very bad.
Born in a tiny town in West Texas. Lived all over Texas for the first half century of my life (and no where else). Moved to Italy two-and-half years ago. Can't see ever going back permanently.

Born Rochdale, Lancashire,UK in 1947. I wouldn't be surprised if I am, dare I say it, the oldest person on this thread. As a 2 year old moved to Adelaide, Sth Aust, with my parents. Lived there for 50 years, relocated to Darwin, NT three years ago. Making a trip back to the UK next August for the first time.
Hey, Margi, I'm older than you! Born in 1942 in Toronto. I've always lived here and figured I'd never leave, but am now making definite (if slightly long-term) plans to move to Victoria, BC. This is a great thread.
Margi,
You are a young chick compared to some of us!!One poster is in his 80's!!
Born on the Air Force base hospital in Fort Dix, New Jersey and now live in beautiful Weston, Connecticut.
For anyone has persevered to the end of this.......I as born/bred in South west Wales.......have lived in Bermuda, Boston, MA.....met my husband-to-be and now we both live in London UK.
And you are all invited to the wedding!!!
Oops....and I have just re read my message after posting it, and realised that I either can't spell or can't type. LOL. Oh well.....you can't have it all.
Margi, being born in 1947 means you are probably the AVERAGE age for people posting on this board, though I have no statistics to prove that. I, too, was born in 1947 and find that a lot of folks here are quite a bit older than me, though there are those who are younger than my children. Fodorites make up a world-wide community, from a wide variety of ages, with a wide variety of incomes. The only thing we all have in common is that we love to travel and to learn about it.
Hi Mimi,
I was born in Orleans, France, moved to So. California, and went to university in Ireland where I have been ever since. A husband and two children later, we now live between Ireland (during school terms) and Andalucia the rest of the year. Just found this website and I think it is quite interesting. Some people are very seasoned travellers and offer helpful advice to others.
I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. I was born in Preston, Lancashire, England.
Born in Oakland, California and raised in the East Bay (Richmond) but for the last 5+ years I have been living in Tokyo, Japan.

Born in Wisconsin, USA

Now live in Albany, NY area - almost 30 yrs in one place.
Thanks for a great thread, Mimi!
Born in Ireland, brought up mainly in Africa, I have lived in England, Ireland, Scotland and France. Now I live in Winchester, a lovely historical part of England, and looking for a place in France.
Hi Mim,
I too love France, and live in Derry, N.H. If I may comment and that other thread, that no matter where you live, there are ignorant people but your attitude could keep them away from you.
What number is this one Mimi????
No one on the board from Las Vegas, Nevada? I was raised near Buffalo, NY, better know to sports writer's, in the '70's, as the arm pit of the East. Survived the blizzard of '77 in Rochester, NY and just had to give up that snow for sunny Vegas.
I think this thread has been interesting. It seems a lot of us have done some moving, isn't that listed under travel somewhere?
Greetings Mimi,
I usually live in a wooded area, here and abouts. When I vacation, I like to visit this site. When I return to the woods I can tell all my troll mates how ego, sometimes generosity, permiates the board. It makes me want to be like all of you. However, as a troll officer I must return to the woods. Remember this: the soul of a troll is to control.
I live to be free, that means I live from place to place. As of now I live in Maine near the Canadian border visting long lost family but will move on to the west coast.

Hi everyone. I'm from the land of ten thousand lakes or more. Thats the great state of Minnesota. Born in Iowa and raised in Illinois. Lived in Mpls, Minnesota for most of my adult years.
To all my friends and to all you other Americans we say many prayers for you.
AmI the only person in Louisiana that likes to travel? Come on! This state has a lot to be desired in my opinion. Where are the rest of you?
30 miles from Ground Zero - the WTC.
Right now, in fear. God pray for all.
Marge, you didn't read well enough. I've said numerous times (including above) that I'm from Las Vegas--and I was raised outside Buffalo too. Concur wholeheartedly with your decision to give up the snow and cold. Why don't you e-mail me. It appears we are the only two from LV, but, fi we have a GTG we can then know we'll have 100% participation!
Can't believe I'm the only Fodorite who resides in San Diego. Are there enough for a get-together---like at lesast one more?
Born in Belgium . Live in Pennsylvania.
Hi, Mimi-
Great post! I was born & raised & live in Edmonton, Alberta - the city with the largest urban "parks" area in North America (our river valley trails system- incredibly beautiful). My boyfriend was born & raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan but has been an Edmontonian since 1976. There's the rest of the prairies heard from, Maurice from Thompson!
We are all nervous, on edge here in Boston. To think they could easily hijack two planes is frightening. Like you, Mimi, I love France (Paris) and I am grateful to have visited early summer.
Pandora we are all frightened. That scare about the fire at Prudential put alot of people futher into depression. Luckily, it was caused by a mishap. But they have permanently closed the beautiful observation tower at John Hancock.
to perplexed:
Kuala lumpur, Malaysia is in South East Asia and home to the world's tallest buildings, the Petronas twin towers. Ironically just 50km away is one of the oldest tropical rainforests in the world called Taman Negara. It is 100mil years old and there are still tribespeople and wildlife such as elephants and tigers there.
Oh, I'm from Penang, Malaysia but now work in Singapore.
Those of you that answered this thread and do not live in the states. Is your country sympathetic toward us?
To sad for us,

Flyover
It's called flyover, because when you travel from one coast to the other, you *flyover*, you don't want to stop where I live. We have about 60 nice days a year.
I really hate where I live. You would too. Can you guess where?

Anyway, we love to travel, and hope to get back to France late next spring, world events and personal finances permitting. P>S>If you know anyone who thinks the term "global village" is just some cutesy catch-phrase, refer them to this thread! Best to all, RobDaddy and Mamma Mia

Thanks for reviving this. I looked for it last week, and it is so comforting to hear from our posters abroad. Living in New Hamshire, one can feel isolated at times.I have never been out of the country, so I like knowing that so many of you are from another country.

i was born in Guatemala, and still live there.
I was born in Guernsey, second largest of the British Channel Islands, and lived there most of my 28 years. I went to university in England and Germany, then moved to London three years ago. My family still lives in Guernsey and I plan to go back one day too, when I'm sick of life in the fast lane. I'm obviously biased, but the Channel Islands are a really cool place. They even named New Jersey after the biggest of our islands. We have our own language (Norman French, although only the old people still speak it), our own governments, and all sorts of other cool stuff. We also had the dubious distinction of being the only British territory occupied during the Second World War. If anyone wants to know more about Guernsey/Jersey/Alderney/Sark etc - great holiday destination if you're headed to UK or France anyway - let me know and I will be glad to share. I could go on forever about the pleasures of my island. And no, I am not a tourism rep.
Caroline
xx
Gerald Durrel started a zoo on Jersey.
Is it still there and is it nice
Sorry, reference to Caroline's post.
Born in Trumbull, CT. Raised and schooled in CT. Moved to Hingham, MA (suburb south of Boston) 2 1/2 years ago. Fascinating, huh? I like to travel, don't like to move, and love the Northeast.
Grew up in Swampscott, MA just north of Boston on the Atlantic coastline. Now live slightly inland in Lynnfield, but have a townhouse in Marblehead. That's the birth place of the American Navy, as well as the sailing capital of the world (supposedly). Marblehead and M'head harbor would be a great daytrip for any of you visiting the Boston area - especially in the summer when all the boats are in the water. It also has an "old town" area with many historic homes that are still well maintained, as well as some "cute" shops.
Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Grew up and currently live in Chicago, IL, USA.
Born in Hickory, NC. Have lived in

Came out to L.A. at age of 20 [alone] from Phila. area. Still hate the cold. 2 years in Berkeley, then many years in So. Calif. If I'd stayed in the east it would have been a shorter, cheaper plane ride to Europe [what does a 20 year old know?] Had dinner at Windows on the World in '91 ---can't get it out of my mind. Thanks to those from abroad for their kind words.
Born and raised in Switzerland, czech passport, lived in Belgium Prague and live now in Zurich/Sitzerland.
Nice to know this post is still going! If anyone cares (all the stories sound so much more exotic than mine), I was born in Philly, raised in Washington, DC suburbs (Olney, Maryland anyone?), went to college in New Jersey, grad school in Montreal, and then ended up settling at the Jersey Shore--which is where I've been since 1987. Husband moved here from London, England just a few years ago, so I guess that means it's home for both of us! Lots of international origins on here--I agree. An impressive group.

I was going to hang back so that I could have the distinction of being #300 but was afraid that the thread would die out by then and I did wish to participate. Are we all fascinating people fascinating other fascinating people ...or do we just need to "get a life?" Re: several months back to Tondalaya- that was the name I was going to use as a "pen name". You must be as old as I am to remember that old movie with Hedy Lamar & Walter Pigeon.

I am still "pidgen-Italian" speaking.

We have 3 tourist seasons (Summer for the lakes and Winston Cup, Fall for the leaf peepers and Winter for the skiers) plus Mud Season. And don't get me started on the knuckle-dragging Cro-Magnon politics. Any doubts as to why I live vicariously through all your adventures and rely on your help when I'm able to escape to France or Italy?? Great thread.

I'm wracking my brain...GTG=get together?
Here in Texas, yes it means get to get to gether and t or tt or ttt all mean topping making that post go to the top of the thread. lofl means laughing on the floor laughing and finally the often obnoxious but sometimes funny, troll, a person who posts a phoney question or statement to get you to react or have you turn on eachother. Usually these trolls will start slamming a poster to create a hate program.
ttt
Is OP original poster or does it mean something else, Pedro?
Herwijnen, the Netherlands.

Ths is amazing that this thread is still alive, When I first posted this I knew few regular posters and now I have met so many who are so agreeable to help you with trips or join in on a fun thread and not take things so seriously. I belive that Black is a safe choice but not something I would wear except at a funeral or a cocktail party(maybe) I believe you should be yourself on your best behavior when you travel, but don't leave behind your sense of humor. I believe we all should have great travel adventures that suit us.

I'm topping my own thread, which I don't often do, as i think it self serving, but I'm so glad to see so many new posters. When I first came to this site., There were so many posters who were so mean to alot of us, with out reason who top a thread, with their coherts, to make it a popularity contest, but if it's a fun one and the dollar is down, why not? We are here, I hope, because of our love of travel, wherever we are, like Sheila, in Scotland, Ben Haines, in England, John in the US, Ursula in Switzerland, Marion in Belgium, forgive me for only mentioning the few I know through the last few several years I have been on line. My friends know who they are so I don't mention them. We are so lucky to have this avenue to get information and meet new friends. I only hope you feel the same way.
Ahhh, is it too late to reply to this thread? The previous poster echoes my sentiments; I've received numerous tips from this message board, so thanks!
For what it's worth, I live in Washington, DC. I was born in the Philippines, grew up in Argenteuil (Parisian suburb), and relocated to northern California for university. I have also lived in Denver, CO, & Chicago, IL.

I was born in Houston, went to college in Austin. Travelled all over Europe twice when I was a young thing in the 1970's...(20 ish). After a long dryspell of overseas travel, I just returned from France w/ husband. We have lived in Boca Raton, FL. for the last 20+ years.

I was born in Jersey City, NJ and my family moved to Woodridge NJ when I was a teenager. After getting married (44 years ago on Aug.22) We moved to our present home in North Arlington NJ.
We had planned our second trip to Italy on September 15, but two weeks ago my wife slipped and fell while entering my daughter's pool. She broke her femur in 3 places and had to have a rod inserted in the bone. She just got out of rehab 2 days ago. We will have to cancel our trip but if she progresses quickly, we plan to go in October. If not, we will wait until the spring.
I was born in New York City then my father was called up into the US Air Force - so I then lived in Tokyo, Japan, and in various states: Florida, Wyoming, Kentucky, Oregon, Virginia, Ohio, and Washington, DC. Currently live in Sonoma County, California (the best of them all!) - about half an hour north of San Francisco.
I was born in Genoa and live in Rome.
I came across this forum while looking for some information about Berlin where I should take a brief full immersion german language class, end of september.

It is so interesting to hear from people from other countries that it makes my day.
I was born and live in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State in Brazil.
I'm a travel counsellor and trabel writer
Hi all,
Just found this thread today as it popped up in the "first 50". I sometimes get to page 2, but not if I'm in a hurry.
Anyway, born and raised and still live in downstate Illinois. I'm an elementary teacher. My husband and I LOVE TO TRAVEL. We manage to travel together during my Christmas and spring breaks.
I was born in a small town in Quebec, Canada and when I was 11 years old, my father decided that the Canadian winters were too much for him. We moved to Santa Monica, California. I lived there for the lates 60's through the 80s' (except for 5 years in Monterey, California), then in '89, I moved to Sacramento, California.
Not the most exciting place, but only 1 1/2 hour away from San Francisco, not a bad deal!
cigalechanta
Who have you met from this board. You mentioned in a post that many of you have met up? When and where?
I was born in Los Angeles, raised in California, went away for college, lived in England and Italy (France briefly) and now live in San Diego.
No I said many have met in real life. I have met only a few, Patricia, and Kam who no longer posts but I am in contact by email or IM with a few dozen.
The weather here in Boston is miserable been raining off and on all day and the same forcast for the next several days.

Born and raised in Detroit....but moved 10 years ago to the lovely little town of Petoskey, right on Lake Michigan...land of the breathtaking sunsets.....but, I'm such an east-coaster at heart that I figured I must've lived THERE in my previous life!

I now live in Concord, MA and love it there! After all that moving about, it definitely feels like home. My only regret is that considering the stratospheric home prices, I may never be able to own my own home in this lovely, historic town.
I was born and raised in west Texas; Crane, Andrews, Odessa/Midland (once home to both President Bush and Bush). Summer before college, worked on an offshore drilling rig in Alaska, living alternately in Anchorage and offshore. Went to college in San Angelo, TX where I met my DH. Had to move back to Odessa/Midland due to DH trying to hang on in oil & gas industry (mid-1980's). I worked in property management. While there this time, my DH received world-wide exposure in the media for his role in helping rescue baby Jessica McClure.
), while DH continues to sell out of the same office which continues to grow and flourish.
In 1989, moved to the Dallas, TX area where DH and I both got heavily into real estate. Against all odds at the time, we managed to succeed. Built a large business of our own selling houses, we simultaneously bought a RE/MAX franchise and established a new office in a fast growing area. We owned and operated it for 7 years and enjoyed it's success. It was time to take it to the next level, but we valued our family more so sold it. I retired, so to speak, to be the primary caregiver of our teens (and shop for travel destinations
Someone on the US forum started a thread, so I thought I'd bring this one up again for our new posters to get to know us and to see if many are still here.
Some have changed the names when registration was required.
Wow! This thread has been going for almost three years!
I was born and raised in Northampton, Massachusetts. I've lived all around the U.S., and am now in Warren, MA. I would love to move back to Virginia someday though!
Born (4 generations) raised and live in - guess!
Good idea Cigale.
I've lived in Canada all my life. Born in beautiful Quebec City, currently live in Montreal.

Born in North Carolina; raised in Sarasota, Florida; have lived in San Diego and Washington DC; now live outside Los Angeles.
This thread has been gone for a while - I think I posted early but in checking I noticed that many - MANY - people had lived in many places. Not everyone says at what point in their lives they did the moving, but I'd be interested in knowing if moving frequently as a child results (as it did with me) in a need to be always on the lam or if anyone can get the bug and then move themselves around as adults. Just musing. And I just left Gainesville (the swamp) for sunny Jupiter (the town, the town, not the planet!) in Palm Beach County, Florida. Oh, it is so loverly. That makes about 20 places I've lived from San Diego to DC to Miami to Mississippi and back. Whew - are we all tired yet? Nah!
Well my dears I'm sure you all know that I've lived all my life in London, and am currently residing in Mayfair.
Born in Warmington, a small village nestling in the Northamptonshire countryside in the UK. Would like to go back, but property prices are horrendous.
Currently living in Whittlesey, a small market town on the edge of the Fens in Cambridgeshire.

Hello everyone,
Born and live in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Born, reared and lived all my life in the Indianapolis, Indiana area except for 3 years in Chicago.
Through extended work engagements I've spent 5 years divided between smaller Illinois & Indiana cities: Peoria, Decatur, Evansville, South Bend but always made it home for the weekends. I also spent three months in Trois Rivière, Quebec.
For Shanna I guess staying in one place so long has given me the travel bug. I didn't live outside of Indiana for work or university (West Lafayette, IN) until I was almost 30.
Born in Claremont, CA. Grew up in San Diego. Went to college in Nashville. The lived in new orleans, and San Diego again. Now in Bergen County, NJ. Am a newbie to this site and wish someone would explain the term "topping" and ttt, for that matter.
Hi Mimi!
I was born and raised in Eden, North Carolina.
Lived in Charlotte during college.

typing in "ttt" or "topping" brings the message back up to the top of the list.
And, I live in Santa Ynez, CA.

Yet we're going to Europe in June for two weeks! Can't help it. It seems that people come and go on this board, so it would be great to hear from current posters where they live.
NJgirl626, "ttt" is short for "to the top". You could type any old thing, not just "ttt" or "topping". Whatever you type, the message will be sent to the top.
Born in Marlborough NH, haved lived everywhere,man.. The last 25 years split between Vancouver Island and Whistler, BC , Canada

I was a "construction brat" if you will, as my father worked on dams and nuclear plants and we landed here. Oh yes indeed, I do believe it gave me the wanderlust! Go should be my middle name. Have travelled frequently, but mostly in the States and surrounding areas. Like cruising but don't love it, as I like to spend more time "exploring" and I find I don't get to do that with such short stops. But hey, its a "go"! My first european trip is in 10 days to Ireland and I'm chomping at the bit!
Great old post!
Canuck, through and through - born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and now living in beautiful Halifax, Nova Scotia.
FainaAgain, according to webflyer.com it is only 5860 miles (9440 kilometers) from Minsk (MSQ) to San Francisco (SFO). Must seem a lot farther, though, huh?

I was born in Chicago, moved to Atlanta for college, Philadelphia for graduate school, and then back to Atlanta, where I reside.
Thanks cigalechanta!
I've lived in Canberra, Australia's national capital for 20 years. I was born near Sydney, and lived there and in Adelaide. I try to make myself useful on the Australia/Pacific and Asia forums, started lurking here in preparation for a long-planned (and hopefully long) visit to Italy and France and was immediately seduced by the sparkling wit and repartee I found. Can't resist a good argument, either.

For six months between each of these overseas postings, we lived in the Washington, D.C. area. Returned to the States permanently at age fifteen.
Got my university degree in Miami, lived on an island in the Florida Keys for three years, then worked in law enforcement in Ft. Lauderdale for a few more years. Then, one long winter into late Spring, criss-crossed the USA as a passenger in an 18 wheeler. Am now a social worker living in a college town in North Central Florida.
Places I've visited: numerous cities in Germany and the Netherlands, Brussels, Istanbul, Paris, Pisa, several towns in Guatemala, Panama Canal Zone. Haven't been to Africa or Asia, but closest friend is Japanese, so her home town of Yokohama's always a possibility.
Sounds like a lot, but when stuff just comes along day by day in your life, that's all it is: your everyday life.
Since this thread began, I wonder how many of us have moved somewhere else.. this year, I moved from NYC to Florida.
Where will I go next ~
That is impressive. Others, like me never get to leave their town due to finances, inertia, or family obligations until a later age.
Cigalechanta/mimi taylor, This is a fun thread. I had no idea Fodorites were such a diverse group.

Live near Los Angeles, born in northern Ohio. Have lived in NYC, Ohio, Chicago area, northern NY, northeast Missouri, Chapel Hill/Carrboro, NC; PAP, Haiti and finally in California for the last 16 years.

Amazing thread! Trish
Ah, but cigalechanta, it's different as an adult. You appreciate travel so much more! You might not have at a younger age.
When I was a kid, every time my parents mentioned another long car trip to Paris to visit friends, or monthly plane ride to Panama to go (groan!) grocery shopping AGAIN, or another train ride to anywhere, they literally had to drag me away from my bedroom and books! I pouted all the way and pinched my younger brother from one border to the next.
Bet no one does that to you when you're traveling now.
Wow this thing is huge!
I was raised in Memphis, TN. Met my military husband in Grand Forks, ND while visiting a childhood friend. We are now in Great Falls, MT and I can't wait to leave. I love small-town cities and would love to live in Denver.
I never know how to respond when people ask me where I am from...
I was born in Hong Kong, grew up in Toronto, Canada. Went to college in Eugene, Oregon (Go Ducks!). Now working in the San Francisco Bay Area (and busily planning my trip to France/Switzerland/Italy next month). Will be moving to Seattle, WA in September for grad school. Pondering where I will be two years from now...

Very cool to read these posts. I wonder how many of us have crossed paths with each other at some points in our lives?

It should be a requirement of birth that people have the opportunity to travel and experience other cultures.

I forgot to mention that my dad was the youngest of eight children, born in 1910. His mom was a German born in Karlsruhe. He was a '31 NYU grad and mom was a '40 UNC/G grad.
He enlisted in the USA (eventually commissioned in the USAAC) after the obscene event of 7 Dec 1941 and after having been married for 15+ months.
He resigned his commission, as did I, as soon as the conflict was resolved.
Few US and Euro folks know what we few have contributed to Europe!

I live in South Africa. Was born in the Free State, moved to the Northern Cape where we lived for 11 years - close to the borders of Botswana and Namibia - have wonderful memories of the Kalahari desert. I am now in Pretoria - 40 km from Johannesburg - and within an hour's drive from wonderful private Game reserves - so Croque Madame - if you want to extend your travels to Africa?!
My heart belongs to France - I try to go there once a year. And when possible to Italy - a piece of my soul was left in Rome!
St. Louis has been home for most of my life. Escaped for a few years to Denver as an undergrad, dragged to Ft. Worth as a bride, returned to St. Louis (with hubby in tow). Telluride is our future home...after college tuition.
Meanwhile we visit Europe as often as the bank account allows.
I am very confused about that question myself, but will try to answer..

Fortunately, I have been able to return there several times over the years ----and now I am in the process of planning a trip for about 15 people for September of next year --- I love playing "tour guide!
Maryann, that is my birth name! My older brother could not say Maryann (so the story goes) and called me mimi. I hated it back then when kids are cruel and would say, mimi the moocher.
Now I like it as I'm more a mimi than a sweet Maryann
Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Born, raised, and still physically residing in Brisbane, Australia - but my heart is in NYC (with Rome a very close second).

Thank you, Lekker, for the challenging invitation to South Africa, but I must decline. Even if South Africa were the most wondrous, the most beautiful of all the countries on the face of the earth, I would still have a problem with South Africa.
Which is that it is located too far away from the Artic Circle.
I have lived in a country where blinding sunlight riccocheted off every white surface (and in Greece, there were many) and I amused myself skating across the sizzling terra cotta tiles of our second floor patio with ice cubes clenched between my bare toes.
I have lived on a island, where, like most islanders, we bought our groceries in bulk. An entire case of applesauce, a side of beef. One sweltering August day, I went outside to the deep freezer (which, due to lack of room in our miniscule house by the water, was kept outside like an unloved dog) only to discover that, sometime in the past two weeks, the freezer had become unplugged. I was looking down into a blood filled vat of heavy, soggy, slumpy, white paper wrapped bundles of what felt like raw liver and which exuded a foul miasma that immediately felled several passing pelicans. Which, for reasons of public health and economy (salvaging the costly freezer) had to be bagged up for disposal by someone, namely moi.
I have lived in a country where the tropical climate and room to stretch encourages small creatures to grow to mammoth proportions and, before putting on your shoes for school in the morning, you first shake them to dislodge any hairy,teacup-sized spiders that may have taken up residence in the night. And you didn't complain as the inconvenienced spider stalked off, because you still had to insert your feet into those shoes, from which the spider's stealthier cousin, the scorpion, was notoriously resistent to eviction.
For these and other rigors, I have renounced travel to any country known to be hot. Thank you for your offer, but this policy pretty much limits my excursions to the Northern Hemisphere.
Croque Madame, I know exactly how you feel! Why do you think am I desperately trying to buy a small house in the Limousin? The rolling green countryside and water is so tempting to me!
Lekker: Notify me the moment the guest room in your Limousin house is complete. I will gladly come lollygag about with you there: will, in fact, make lollygagging in Limousin my goal in life.
Croque_Madame, I had no idea that the northern hemisphere is cooler than its southern counterpart. This discovery that will surely revolutionalise climatology and meteorology as we know it! The last time I ventured into the northern hemisphere (Vietnam, on that occasion) I sweltered. Perhaps I really hadn't left the southern hemisphere, my little corner of which is currently on the cool side, with a little snow on the mountains to the south of my fair city of Canberra. And to cap it all off, a few weeks ago my son phoned from Beijing and reported the daytime temperature as 43C (for Americans, that's 109F). I'm sure I found Beijing north of the equator in my old school atlas......
What, Neil? Are you telling me that I must restrict my travels to an even smaller portion of the globe? Egads!
Please forgive my ignorance of global weather patterns and general cartography. I was referring vaguely, very vaguely, to places associated (in my dim mind, at least) with the words "North" and "cold".
I'm sure the snow on the mountains south (that word again!) of Canberra are a glorious sight. Should I be dropped atop one from a helicopter, I would flop around like the happiest of snow angels. It's the overland trek TO the mountains I find less appealing.
Did not mean, truly, to insult your home country, nor any other. It's just that I become so... bedraggled... in hot weather. Again, my apologies.
Currently living in Dublin, Ireland. Went to college in Birmingham, England and worked for 2 years in Indian Wells, California. Travels have taken me to France, Italy, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Bali, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Hoping for many more trips in the years to come!
Croque_Madame, please excuse my Antipodean sensitivity. I'm not a hot weather freak either - a daily range of about 10-25C (50-77F) with low humidity sounds about right to me. I just wish I could get more of it.
Lekker: did you know there is a store in Boston called "Lekker"? I was surprised to find an ad for it this afternoon in a magazine called "Lucky". Strange coincidence after having just had an interesting Fodors contact with someone named Lekker. www.lekkerhome.com
Neil: that's OK, all is forgiven. Standing face to the wall in the corner, wearing my dunce cap all day, gave me time to mull my many mistakes.
I know precisely what you mean about wishing for cooler temperatures. Guess where I live?
Florida! Penance for my countless transgressions. Ironic, isn't it?
CM, where is that store? I live here. What do they sell? where is is located?
curious here, mimi
Ummmm... I think it's on Washington Street and sells unusual home accessories. Just glanced at the ad while waiting half naked for the doctor.
www.lekkerhome.com
Ah, thanks, Croque Madame, that's on the newly gentrified (and expensive now) of our old South End. We were in a street one block over where we biked for father's day for a few of the new trendy restaurants on Tremont Strret.
Have a wonderful 4th!!!
Croque Madame - you are welcome in my Limousin house!! (I firmly believe in dreams!) I will just post a message here the day I found it and completed a successful transaction!
No - I did not know there is a store named after me in Boston! This is very interesting - when I wanted to register on this forum, every name I tried was taken already, so I became impatient and thought I'll take "lekker" which is a very typical Afrikaans word to describe something very nice! Even the English people in South Africa use it because it is such a "lekker" word to express yourself or describe something!
I had a quick look at the website and must say I like the stuff "my shop" is selling!

P. S. Salzburglover, I have always believed I was European in a previous life. Maybe that's why I keep going back to that part of the world. Hmmm....
Unlike some of the above posts, mine is somewhat less glamorous...born in Dundee, described by others on this board as the armpit of Scotland! Now living near York, in the north of England.
Aw, Fi_uk Your Dundee marmalade is very popular here. Never heard that terrible remark.
Welcome to all, new to the boar, and I hope you are having better weather than here in the Boston area.
Yes! I agree with cigalechanta! Dundee Orange Marmalade is a favorite in our house and what an awful thing to say about a place!
How is the weather there?
How is Boston weather? Ours is hot/humid..nothing new ~
It's hot and humid here in Austin, as usual in the summer. Because of Westerns, none of which were actually filmed in Texas, everyone thinks it's a dry desert here--NOT TRUE for the most populated parts of the state, including the capitol city of Austin. However on humid days like today I wish it were.
Thansk for your nice welcome to the board, cigalechanta!! It's great to be a Fodorite!!

Hi Mimi
What a super thread. It is facinating to put some 'flesh' on the bones of some of the regular contributors.
I was born in Southport in lancashire on the coast of north west England. Ive lived in Liverpool,London and now for many years in a small village in Shropshire in the 'midwest' of the UK.
I also spend as much time as I can at our place by the sea in another even smaller village called Torcross in Devon south west England. So you can see where I get my 'handle'.
By the way I really enjoy travel and have visited the states many times and love the american people and the lovely weather. I also get to do some serious shopping as you can imagine we're a bit short of shopping malls where I live.
Thanks for the posting

Sophia, are you a neighbor of Martha Stewart??
I'm new to this board. I was born in Sydney Australia and now live on the Central Coast about an hour north of Sydney and it's a very beautiful place to live. We have just had our first taste of winter this weekend but mostly our days are sunny and warm. Unfortunately we are also in a state of drought and desperately need some good rain.
margaret, I wish i could send you some rain. we have had too much. My tiny garden is now dead from too much rain and slug infestation. Worse, my potted cooking herbs did not survive.
Hi Cigalechanta it's Countrymouse.
If it's rain you want you should visit the UK right now! We've got lots of it and my poor geraniums are drowning!
It only seems to be at night though at the moment so that's OK because if it didnt rain so much our countryside wouldnt be so beautiful. As you may have guessed we British are obsessed by the weather, which is why so many of us go to the states every year to get some guaranteed sunshine. I'll try and blow some rain your way if it will help.
Bye CM
Has anyone actually read all these posts? And is anyone headed for the Ozarks? That's where we live now, in Sspringfield, MO, though was born in Chicago and lived in Illinois and Middle West. Off soon to see family in Poughkeepsie, NY, and Amesbury, MA.
BTW, anyone now living in Hungary or Poland where we hope to travel next year?

countrymouse I said we have had too much
Bill I vactioned as a child at Salisbery beach and Plum island.
Wow, I originally replied to this message on 8/14/2001. A lot has changed for me since then... I've since gotten married and moved to Atlanta, Georgia!
Dear cigalechanta
Sorry about your herbs,of course when I re read the postings it was margaret who had the drought.
We used to have a terrible problem with slugs and snails until our neighbour went all minamilist and replaced their lawns with gravel and since then weve had far less. I put out jam jars with a little beer or sugar water in the bottom which is quite an effective eco friendly way of keeping them at bay.
Plum island sounds interesting, is that in the Boston area?
Thanks for the welcome

I, too, was interested to hear that the northern hemisphere was cooler than the southern hemisphere - that's a bit unexpected at this time of year. Mind you - it could be right. My Swedish friends tell me it's cooler there than in Sydney, and it's midwinter here (as you surely know!)
Born in Sydney, live in Sydney, work in Sydney, and escape to Europe as often as possible, to try some of that cooler weather!
Hi margo oz
Isn't it true that the grass always seems greener in the other field. Here in the UK we are always prayng for hot weather and there you are wanting to come to europe to cool down. It has been a very disappointing summer here. We had a spell of gorgeous weather in late May early June and we all started buying barbies and getting very excited, but it petered out quite soon and since then weve had a lot of rain and much cooler days than last year. When you consider the british summer only usually lasts until the end of august it wont be long at this rate until we're all back in our thermal draws!
I eagerly await e-mails from my friends in Melbourne to hear of their fabulous trips to the beach and barbies round their pool, when we're freezing over here. Friends in the UK who have pools only seem to be able to use them about twice a year these days!
This is why so many of my compatriots emigrate to your sunny shores every year. We have a place right by the sea in Devon and even on the hottest days the sea is freezing and only the hardiest souls go in. I'm proud to say i'm one of them, but there agin I'cve always been a bit mad!
Hope you are enjoying yourself over there whatever your weather.
Bye CM

Londoner born and bred, first in SW London (Putney), now in Docklands (www.pjw74og.u-net.com/places.htm).
I have lived away (Cambridge, the Potteries), and travelled a lot on business and for pleasure. Though I have a friend in Australia who likes persuading me up mountains and such (and I do enjoy having done that), I think I'm really a city person at heart - Amsterdam, Paris, Sydney, Prague, Tallinn, Berlin, Vancouver...wherever I go, it's exploring what people have made of cities that I find interesting.
Good morning emtravel. Where in Florida do you think you want to move? Have you visited the state often to get a feel for it? I have lived here since 1979 after moving from NY and CT. If you need some info let me know.
Countrymouse. I started reading the posts with the intent of going through all of them but have given up. My eyes went blooee. Now I just check in now and then. I wonder if I will run across anyone that has lived where I have lived at about the time I lived there.
Chloer and others from this beautiful in the summer and freezing in the winter state of Maine - I too live here. Born in Washington D.C., brought up in Europe and the Far East - feel I am a citizen of the world although Maine is my home now.

Cigalechanta,

Dear PLMN
You lucky thing.
Florida is one of our favourite places and we go there whenever we can. Ive visited Daytona but never stayed there.
You may be just the person to help me.
I notice from your 'bio' that you used to live in NY. We are planning to go back to florida next April but were wondering about the feasibilty of going via NY, staying there a couple of nights ,as we have never been there, then travelling down to florida.
Is this a practical suggestion do you think? What are fares from NY to Florida like and which would be the best airline to travel with? Also how long would the domestic flight be?
We usually fly direct to Orlando, Tampa or miami with either BA or Virgin, only because their flight times are shorter than most airlines. Maybe you could recommend an alternative airline.
Woo! that lot should keep you out of mischief for some time!
I would really appreciate it though if you could take the time to reply.
Many thanks
CM
Hi, Mimi. I'm a native Oregonian, and I live in Portland. My "spiritual hometown" is Liverpool, England. Hail again, Countrymouse! I love it when you say that the Brits come here for sunshine. Only if they go to California, Florida, or Las Vegas. Oregon's weather is just like Britain's. One reason, no doubt, that I feel so at home in all those clouds and rain.
Born in Providence, RI...my biggest move -- 45 minutes South to be closer to the beaches.
Talk about moving to Florida, we will see in about 1 year...if FL is a no-go thinking of living on one of the caribbean islands for a couple of years...then I am sure, it will be back to little rhody...
Hi Merseyheart
Unfortuately all I know about Oregon is gleaned from the odd travel programme on TV. Do you have 'proper' summers and snowy winters? Am I right in thinking that you have vast forests there. If so you must have some great hiking trails. I love walking on the coastal cliff paths and on the beaches around my summer home in Devon but as I live the rest of the year in a very flat part of shropshire I dont get much chance to wander through forests.
Thanks for your reply, and as the Liverpudlians would say,
Tara fer now!

Countrymouse and Mercy, When I was staying with my friends in Liverpool I wanted to take them to dinner but they said no they hated posh restaurants, but their son Jake insisted they go. So they said you two go and I asked the son where have you thought of that appeals
to you, he said the Needle. So I said ok, except you are paying and handed him the money. He was so thrilled. He ordered for me and paid the bill. The waiter was great and asked how long had I been dating the midget.
Born in Louisiana.
Raised in Clearwater, Florida.
Lived in Western North Carolina while in college.
Returned home to live just a few miles south of Clearwater in Indian Rocks Beach.
Hi Countrymouse....Yes, Oregon does have proper summers and winters. We're just milder than much of the U.S. We might have one or two days of snow during the winter. And then a few really hot days (95-100) in the summer. Mostly, it's overcast and rainy. I mean, it often doesn't rain. You just *think* it might and plan accordingly. (In that way, very much like travelling in the U.K.) Oregon is a place for the outdoors. Portland is a well-situated city. We are 90 minutes from the beach, and an hour from Mt. Hood. People do a lot of hiking, skiing, boating. I can't say I'm a real outdoorsy kind of gal, but I do like to dance! Yes, we have lots of forests, too. Forestry used to be a major industry here, but in the last 20 years, it's become overshadowed by the high-tech businesses. Intel is here, and I live 20 minutes from the *world headquarters* of Nike! ( A home-grown business, I might add.)

This thread is now too long so I'll start a new one to welcome new posters. Lately there have been some threads frozen or deleted due to turning ugly. I think some of our new posters felt they were insulted or hurt by a few posters. Some have surly personalities but it doesn't mean it's directed at you, some who are so bright and talented, jump at eachother anytime they can, when they could be friends, sharing the same interests. the weather that has dangerously threatened friends and relatives has understandably frazzled some, so as summer comes to her end, and we are heading towards the holiday season, lets try for a gentler nicer end to this year.
ttt
cigalechanta, that sounds good, "a gentler nicer end to this year" is something we can try.

Wait, you don't mean starting now, do you?

Hello everyone. Although I feel like I "live" on American Airlines, I was born in Binghamton, N.Y., went to college in Pittsburgh, PA. and I currently reside in Dallas, Texas while commuting to work in New York city. Future plans include calling Italy home.
I was born in the naval hospital in Portsmouth, VA, on the coast. But for five years when I lived just north of Philadelphia, I have lived in the Tidwater area. Currently in Chesapeake, VA. I love this area - it is on the ocean, 3 hours to the Blue Ridge Mountains and 1& 1/2 hour to the Outer Banks of NC. Williamsburg and James Town are about 45 minutes away. DC is about 3 & 1/2 hours away. Lots and Lots of American History very close. Of course the humidity in the summer is brutal - but if you are on the beach - who cares?

Don't you love Australian place names?
yes, I do, and an Aussie friend of mine taught me the phrase, "I don't know if I was Arthur or Martha," after an allnight party with other Australians.
Actully that Arthur or Martha phrase is one that is really used (as opposed to say "I'm as dry as a dead dingo's donger", which is more of a Mick Dundee phrase). We have lots like that - I like "I'm flat out like a lizard drinking"

kauai, when I thought this thread became too long, I started a where do you live part 11. I should have said part 2, but they seem to prefer this one.
Welcome!

from reading the other post "french view..." i gather you were ill. whatever the case, i hope you're feeling better. no words, only hugs...
Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. Then on to the US: Illinois, South Carolina, back to Illinois, then on to Massachusetts (Boston, Cambridge, Gloucester). And back to Brazil, again, but to the City of Salvador, Capital of the State of Bahia, in the North-East region where I still live now.

Born in the ghetto of Cleveland's East Side. Moved to the east suburbs where I lived until the age of 48. Followed my heart and career to the South suburbs of Denver, where I and my family now happily reside. This has allowed me to visit many places I might not have been able to had
I remained- Asia, Europe, many destinations in the U.S. West that are now within easy reach. Colorado, in itself, would suffice as a vacation destination for years to come.
Dobra Hoot and Na Zdhavi
Although this is my screen site, my daughter-in-law Lucie shares it with me, reading all the various messages etc. She asked me was I sending in a reply, and I replied 'no', my background was too ordinary, then she said, what about me. She was born in Czech Republic, spent first 25 years of her life there, then 5 years in the UK where she met my son, and now they are living in Melbourne, Australia. She sends greetings and says: dobra hoot and na zdravi to all!!! (for those of you that read Czech)
I live in Melbourne too, under a canopy of giant mountain ash, tree ferns and rhododendrons, in the Dandenong Ranges. Born Adelaide, South Australia, have lived in Canberra, Sydney, Far North Queensland, and Islington,London. My heart is at the bottom of Australia, at the bottom of the world.

I have enjoyed travel to Italy, Switzerland, Austria and London. Love parts of California, and have a soft spot for Ann Arbor. I would like to spend the next few years traveling in search of that special place to call home.

Hello mimi, have really enjoyed the read. Born in France, moved to Canada to Summerside PEI, North Bay ON, Cold Lake AB then finally back to North Bay. North Bay is between two very different lakes, one shallow and sandy and the other deep and rocky, our home is on the shore of the deep and rocky. We have travelled to many Canadian points, USA, Germany, France, Switzerland and Austria. Here's a relocate question... We will never leave this place in summer, it is just too gorgeous, but have been scouting for winter retirement, any ideas? So far we have been advised to try Portugal or Greece. We plan to do some research trips, but would welcome any other ideas.
Hallo, this is a European Forum. Is there anyone From Europe, or are you all Experts after travelling here for a short time?

For-shizzle.
Favorite destinations: Manhattan, South Beach, Madrid, San Diego, Vegas!
Cig, there are two copycat kind of threads. As much as I like you I think all three should be deleted because they are non travel and some the regulars have been banned because of others griping about non travel and too chatty threads. Maybe the new posters will chime in to raise this to the limit so the last one will get a thrill.
I was born in Chicago, IL, and have lived in many places, including Europe and the Mid-East. I now live in Anacortes, WA, the "Gateway to the San Juan Islands". I usually travel to the cities close to the Caspian Sea and away from all the madness of politics and government in Tehran. Hopefully, in the near future with the change of goverment more people from around the world will travel to Iran and explore this country, my Iran.

I don't know if I have responded to this thread previously or not! I now live in the southern end of the Sacramento Valley, CA. Born and raised in the SF/Bay Area. Maternal side of the family came to SF from Bath, NH a year or so after the Civil War. Other family ancestors are from Europe and NZ/Austrailia and the Maritime Islands of Canada.
Stu T, a family member was involved with the clocktower in downtown Petaluma.
My paternal grandfather had vineyards in Lodi waaaay before Lodi was known for their vineyards and wine.
It is so interesting to read about everyones background.
Born in S California, living in Eugene, Oregon for the past 10 years (with the exception of a few interludes in Austria).
Hopefully headed to Dornach, Switzerland for the next 5 years.
I'm from Columbus,Georgia. No not the one in Ohio the other one the smaller more conservative one. It's about 100 miles southwest of Atlanta.
I saw this and knew I had to represent C-town. It's a midsized army town, we have a couple minor league teams and fairly decent mall. Born and raised here. I will start plotting my escape next year after graduation. But everyone under 25 talks about getting out of Columbus and moving to Atlanta.
This has to be like the longest thread ever. Cool.

I was born in Paris (mother American, father French), lived there until I was 13 years old attending French Catholic schools and boarding school. Imagine the culture shock when I landed in a Massachusetts public middle school and had to learn English. Spent high school years in Virginia. Parents moved to Rome (Italy not NY) when I went to college in Vermont. After graduation I settled in central Massachusetts which is where I have been ever since (over 30 years). I don't get to return to France very often (next month will only be my 4th trip), so I cherish every moment because I consider any visit as my last one. I envy the seasoned Fodorites who go over to Europe one or more times a year. Nevertheless, I have fallen in love with the Southwest and within the next decade am SO looking forward to moving somewhere there. New England winters have taken a toll on me.
Great Thread!

I'm born and raised in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California. Almost all the travel forums I've read always comment on how dull and boring the Valley is to drive through (I guess it's all that "dull" farmland), but they don't see the bounty the earth gives us.
I'm a long time lurker of fodors boards and I find it more civil than most. Not traveled much. Most of Italy once(with a couple of days in Germany and Innsbruck Austria), and back to Rome last December. Currently planning a solo trip to Vienna Austria but the future mr. whoknew is pouting in the background so maybe he'll change his mind.

I live in Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand, having arrived here from New Zealand, along the way living in Australia, Hong Kong and Malaysia. A trip that took me 32 years.
At the last count, I had visited 37 countries, many of them more than once. London remains my favourite city and I don't see anywhere ever replacing it. There are many countries that I would like to return to, but there are also many countries that I have yet to see. At present, I am waiting to discover whether I am going to be spending the next 12 months working in India, or whether I am going to be free to visit Egypt and Greece, both for the first time.

Looking forward to going back to London next year with my brother and looking at some day trips from there since it will be my third trip to London. Boy, some of you have REALLY been able to see the world. How lucy is that?

My husband and I were, like, born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, (L.A.) like, all our lives. And, like, we still live here, like, all the time. And, like, I don't think we'll ever leave Southern California. It's, like, waaaay expensive, but, like, we'll just have to deal.
I'm outy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Born in New York City.
Lived in: Washington D.C.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Rural Upstate NY; Jerusalem, Israel. Now live in Maryland.
I just caught this thread by accident and think it's an absolutely wonderful question. Here's my two-cents' worth.
Born in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania to parents from Mechanicsburg and Lewisberry, PA. Their own parents were from that area, but their grandparents were Swiss Germans and Bavarians.
I was raised in my father's hometown of Lewisberry, though we did move a few times within it, and we were homeless for a few months when we tried to emigrate to Australia (and failed); during that time, we bounced from Scranton to Philadelphia to Gettysburg.
Following my high school graduation, I was a Rotary exchange student to Norway. I lived on the island of Sula, off the west coast of the country and close to the town of Ålesund. I spent my first 9 1/2 months in a place called Mauseidvåg, then moved to another family in a town called Langevåg. It was this year abroad that really fostered the wanderlust in me: until that year, I had never been out of the US, not even to Canada or Mexico. I had only seen a handful of states (PA's border states, the eastern seaboard on a marching band trip to Florida and Illinois and Michigan).
I spent two more years in Lewisberry, trying to decide what I wanted to do in college till I finally decided to major in Norwegian. I moved to Seattle and lived in the First Hill and Ballard districts during my four years there.
Following my college graduation, I took a Masters degree in Glasgow, Scotland. I went home for a year, and then came to where I am now--Cork, Ireland--to continue my studies.
I have travelled quite a bit since my exchange year. During that year, we did a three-week tour of Europe, which took in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, London, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. I also went with a host family to Denmark, and we travelled (as students) extensively throughout Norway (Trondheim, Hell, Oslo, Molde, Åndalsnes). I was fortunate enough to also get to Lillehammer during the Winter Olympics there (this should tell you how old I am!!!)
As an undergrad, my best friend and I took spring break trips to: (freshman year) greater Seattle area and Issaquah/Snoqualmie, (sophomore year) western Montana (driving tour for a week which also took us to SK and AB), (junior year) London and (senior year) Victoria, BC. We also took day trips to Leavenworth, WA and Portland, OR. From Glasgow, I travelled to Cambridge, Manchester, Edinburgh, Dublin, St Andrews, Fort William, Loch Ness, Inverness and Cumbernauld. And since I've been in Ireland, I've seen the whole of the island in several long trips with friends who've come to visit, as well as Northern Ireland, Wales, southwest England, Denmark (a more extensive trip), Iceland, several trips to London and Amsterdam.
My last large trip was this past June, when my best friend and I drove from Pennsylvania south to Georgia (and my car broke down--we almost always have that happen on our road trips... ask me about moving to Seattle sometime!) via VA, WV, KY, TN, AL and GA, then coming back through SC and NC on our way to I-81.
I can't stand to stay in one place for too long: I get the itch to go and I can't ignore it. I'm actually moving back to the US at the end of this month, after 4 1/2 years in Ireland, and I really don't know what to do! I'm going back to Lewisberry, and I feel like I should be moving elsewhere.
My dream residences are London, Cape Town, Nelson (NZ), Missoula and possibly NYC, though I'm growing increasingly fond of New Hope, PA. Still don't want to retire in my home state, though. I think I'd like to spend my life abroad, actually. I seem to be happiest trying to adjust!

This is lovely!
I was born in England but have lived in Australia since I was 17.
I have lived in Melbourne but mostly in Adelaide - long, wide beaches; rolling hills covered in vineyards; mediterranean climate (40 degrees today though and too hot!); arts festivals; not much traffic; great shops & markets; lots of lovely wine ......
Cool!
Born in the Philippines
Moved to Michigan as a young girl
Moved to Hawaii 3 days after graduating from High school
Would love to live in Europe (London or Rome) for 6 months/Hawaii 6 months.
I was born in Nanaimo Canada but spent most of my childhood in Victoria. After six years in Vancouver and 14 in Toronto I'm back in Victoria. I'm heading for Rome (first time) in February.
Born in Alexandria, Virginia. Moved to Maryland when I was 5 and was raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
In between:
Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
Syracuse and Albany, NY.
Denver, Parker and currently, Aurora, Colorado.
<quote>I was born in Nanaimo Canada but spent most of my childhood in Victoria. After six years in Vancouver and 14 in Toronto I'm back in Victoria. </quote.
From the home of the infamous Nanaimo bars to the best high tea that side of the Atlantic, outwest? Lucky person, you! I absolutely loved Victoria when I was there on spring break in 2000. We had such a fabulous time and the people were lovely. Spent time in Dark House books, stumbled across Munro's and found a chocolatier that made dark chocolate hedgehogs! And there was an Avoca there, if memory serves--a little bit of Ireland in Canada.
This is so engaging, because after you get to know certain people on the forum, you really do find yourself wondering about their lives and backgrounds.
For me--Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. Bachelor's degree in English from USL in Lafayette, Louisiana. Master's degree in English lit. from University of Arkansas (I think Bill Clinton was an undergrad when I was there, but not sure). Have lived in those places plus Milwaukee, Wis., Murray, KY, Manhattan (loft in China Town), New Orleans again, and now (for the last 24 years) in Oak Park, Illinois, nearest suburb west of the Chicago loop. Retired English teacher, ready for travel.
Lazuliangel mentioned that she gets the itch to move after she's been in a given place for a while. Sounds like me. After I finished college (in Spokane, Washington), I went to Seattle for a year, then back to Spokane for another year of school.
I then went to a ghastly little town in California (Boron--near Edwards Air Force Base) for two years. That was when I decided I'd never collect more belongings than I could get in my car, in case I wanted to make a quick getaway and that I'd never stay in one place for more than five years. The following year I was in Moses Lake, Washington, after which I moved to Chitose, Japan to teach on an army base for a year.
The next year I lived at Camp Zama, Japan, near Tokyo, and following that, at Heidelberg, Germany, for five years.
By this time I had forgotten my resolve about not collecting a lot of junk, but I stored it all in my parents' basement. After another year and a half in Spokane spent earning a masters' I moved to Sacramento, California, where I violated both my rules, remaining for 25 years and collecting two sofas, a refrigerator, etc.
I am now back in Spokane, which I love. No traffic to speak of, little crime, plenty of cultural activities, affordable standard of living.... But don't think about moving here. We're already filled up!
born in philadelphia

Hi PegontheRoad:
>>>The next year I lived at Camp Zama, Japan, near Tokyo<<<
I'm returning to Japan for the first time in 60 years this April...I spent time in Camp Zama when it was the Fourth Replacement Depot, in 1946. Tokyo was charred beyond belief. We went south to Beppu, Kyushs where I wa sstaioed with the 19th Infantry Regt (24th Division)...going to visit Beppu this time too. Wrote to the Mayor who will be receiving me, and giving me a tour of where our base was located.
Very thankful that we didn't have to invade Japan back then. I would have been in the second or third wave.Ugh!
Stu T.
tower,
Sounds like you are alive today thanks to nuclear weapons.

Born in England (Ipswich and moved to Canada (Toronto) when I was 1 and have been there ever since. Can't imagine living anywhere else.
This post is so valuable when you find yourself hearing from the same people frequently and wanting to know just a little bit about their backgrounds. Is there a way to somehow sort this into alphabetical order, so that we could find out a little about one of our Fodor pals without going through thousands of names? I am defintely not smart enough to solve this, only curious enough to ask the question. Is this something that Fodors could do for us? Just wondering. jg
I've lived in Australia all my life - born in Adelaide, then Sydney for primary school year, Brisbane for high school and uni, then Darwin first ten years and then back to Brisbane for fiften years. Hello Caseya.
I live in Adelaide - and am going to Europe in July with my husband for 4 weeks.
I went as a 21 year old many years ago after I finished my first year teaching, but my husband has only ever been on business so like you, we are very, very excited!
Hope you have a wonderful time!
BTW, this website has been invaluable in helping us plan our trip.At first I felt a bit foolish asking questions but the responses have genuinely been helpful so it has been worth the slight embarrassment.
Enjoy!
Hi Sissy, like you I am finding the advice given so willingly on this site really helpful too. Know what you mean about the 'feeling silly' to start with but the more specific the queries, then the better the answers it seems. My first Europe trip is from mid-June to mid-July this year too - in the planning phase now (hence my regular visits to this forum) - taking in London, touring England, Paris, and Venice/Rome. My husband doesn't want to come so I'd decided to go on my own, but a friend of mine asked if she could come too (her hubby travels to Europe regularly for work).
What parts of Europe are you including in your trip? Hope its a great trip too, wherever you go!

weelynnie said "Probably be back in Scotland in my old age as I can't live without it". *sigh* And the Glaswegian staring at the Clyde from the office window made me long for my old flat on Winton Drive.
I would love to move back. Sadly, I'm an American with an American passport, no marketable and/or short-listed profession, great-great grannies who were European and thus too far removed to claim 'heritage' and no chance of a Euro-hubby (though I'm looking!!!). For me, unless the rules change drastically, Europe is just going to be a place to visit anymore.
Someone recently asked if any of us had moved since we answered this post. Yes: I have. When I answered I was just starting to pack for my trans-Atlantic move from Cork to Pennsylvania. I'm back in the greater Harrisburg metro area now and have been for six months. I can't begin to tell you how homesick I am for Ireland.
And to the Llanelli native: Wales IS positively beautiful. I spent several days driving around the country (Cardiff through Brecon straight to Colwyn Bay, then west and down the coast back to Barry) and just loved it. Had not seen anything so spectacular in a long time than when I was standing in Portmeirion taking pictures in a heavy downpour. I still remember the floodlit castles and trying to get a local to pronounce Llanfair PG for me.
Have lived in North Carolina for 60 years...most recently in Greensboro (gso)
Welcome to all of you who have added to this thread and we hope to read of your adventures.
Matroskin. I looked at your photos of Paris and of your lovely family.
It's late here, I'll enjoy the rest another day.

I was born in Denver and grew up in Phoenix. I've lived in Butzbach Germany, Redondo Beach CA, Honolulu and San Diego. I am currently living in Phoenix, BUT giving mild thought about moving to Costa Rica for awhile. The only thing that I know for sure is that I'll always eventually come back to Arizona.
Born in Jersey
Raised in Texas
Now live in Minnestoa.
Love to travel!!!!!!!!!
Greater Sacramento area (on the way to Lake Tahoe). I've lived in Northern California my whole life except for a semester in London.
It's hard to believe this has been going on since 2001!
Born in Florida (yup, an actual native), lived 8 years in Germany (not all consecutively) and elsewhere, now my body lives in the Florida panhandle on the Redneck Riviera but my heart is still in Europe.
Another Florida native...
born in Orlando, moved around for 12 years as an Air Force brat, and have been living back in Florida since 1977.
PS: Reading this thread is like reading six years of history, especially the dates surrounding 9/11. Thanks for topping it.
Just saw this old thread, so I guess I will join in:
Actually it feels more like everywhere is our home as we take our home with us where ever we go and we are loving the freedom of this lifestyle.
I was born in Michigan but lived all over the U.S. including many years bi-coastal between NYC and LA, but spent the last decade or so in Santa Cruz, Ca near family which feels like home...sort of.
I guess we are homeless.
We are permanent travelers, so do not live anywhere, although we are wintering in Spain for the our second winter, so it feels like our home away from home now.
We are 16 months into our open ended , multi year trip around the world and loving it thus far:

Hi Mimi,
What an amazing thread since 2001! I have a suggestion....do you want to post a link to this thread in each site because it is only found in Europe; perhaps post an announcement in the Lounge, U.S., Asia, etc. Many do not know of it; I only happened upon it by accident after being here a year!
As for me:
-Born in Burma
-grew up in Columbus, Ohio
-schooled in Baltimore 1978-1987
-finished training in Boston 87-89
-now live in San diego and second home in Park City.
I have traveled everywhere but more to Europe than anywhere else. To the poster from Sintra.... I have been there! fantastic memories, great people.
Hi Ncounty, feel free to post this there. I wish we had met when you were here in Boston. What a special life you have.
Mimi,
Let's meet anyway! I would love to come to Boston and have a GTG. I don't know who else is in Boston, maybe Escargot? I love Boston and am way overdue for a return visit.
ncounty, the Boston GTG is October 11. Please come. It's a great group!
Probably I have already answer Mimi post.Ciao Bella..

What has this pointless thread got to do with travel?
Gomiki- thanks for the invite! My work schedule is made two months in advance so it is unlikely but I'll look into it.
Harley USA! We live in a suburb of Milwaukee (Waukesha) where the roar and rumble of the Harley-Davidson 105th birthday party is commencing. As I write I can hear the live band entertaining those camping at the Expo and all day the roads have been alive with that "sound". This is a huge party in these parts...
I didn't realize this was such an OLD thread til I'd read half of the posts! When I got to the posts after 9/11 I got goose bumps! Anyway, I grew up in Alabama, moved to Hollywood, Florida, San Jose, California, Rancho Cucamonga, California, then to Fort Wayne, Indiana. We have family in Colorado, Georgia, Alabama and California, so we travel to those places often. I travel with girlfriends to Europe in March and with my husband in October every year, have been to many of the lovely places you've all lived. I just love traveling and sharing on this site.
Born and living in Montevideo,Uruguay.

BOSTON GTG, 2008
Its that time again when we need to get a count
as to who is coming and what your interests
might be.
The GTG will be held Saturday October 11,
2009 at the Le Meridien Hotel (formerly
the Hotel @ MIT); 20 Sidney Street;
Cambridge, MA.
We will gather at about 11AM in the rear of
the restaurant. It was called Sidney’s Grill.
Lunch will be served about 1PM. The cost
of the lunch will be $22.00 per person, all inclusive, except
for alcohol drinks and extras you might order.
We will host a dinner the nite before for anyone
who wishes to attend. The menu will be Italian
and we expect to dine at Bistro 5 in West Medford.
This is yet to be confirmed however. This is subject
to change however. We need to test it first.
On Saturday nite, Andy has again reserved the
Similan Thai Restaurant on First Street, Cambridge.
We will gather there at 7PM. We will split the bill
as we have done in the past.
Today I request that each of you indicate to me
here or via e-mail (rhkonthailand@msn.com) your
intentions. I would need to know how many people
will attend EACH of the 3 meals. How many for lunch,
how many for dinner Friday, and how many for dinner
Saturday.???? Also include your screen name on fodors,
your full name, and your email address.
Thanks and we look forward to seeing you again
or for the first time.
Bob (rhkkmk) and Andy (gpanda)
While this sounds so wonderful, we leave for Amsterdam-Belgium-France trip Oct. 15, don't think we can sneak in a trip so close to departure.
I am wondering how all this works out, if you know each other at all or just by posts, and if one wanted to set up a meeting in say, Amsterdam, would you just say you'll be at a certain location and meet up with whomever shows up? This sounds great, hope you all have lots of fun.
Someone decides to have a GTG in their area. For instance Newyork/New Jersey but lots of posters from other states might join in. A restaurant or someone's home is where we meet. A fee for lunch or dinner and no, we usually have never met in person before.
Usually the nicer posters are the ones who attend.
I was born in Sebastopol, California
(Sonoma County Wine Country) & except when I was in the service I have lived in the same county my whole life(over 60yrs). I can't understand how anyone can not understand how this is not part of traveling. By us telling others where we were born & lived it tells others where they can travel to. By one of our Daughters moving to Germany 16 yrs. ago it gave us a new horizon to go over & many places to take & leave our hearts. Open your minds as well as your hearts when you travel & you may learn something.
topping for Challiman.
Welcome and thank you,RonReyn.
I started this post back then before registration because so many posters with "attitude" and used many names, rather than their real ones used this board to to insult, show how better they thought they were. Cowards rarely reveal themselves or attend a GTG.
They use many names to top their threads. Things haven't changed much since I started this thread.
We lost several informative posters because of death. And several left because of fodors politics.
Live in Ozark, Arkansas and love it. Just beautiful... four seasons.
I live in Melbourne, Australia and about to leave on my sixth trip overseas (back to France for the 4th time and breaking some new ground in Tuscany for a week)

cmt, are you coming to the Boston GTG?
For the new fodorites, you can now check the fodor's calender for a get together (gtg) in your area.
Thank you for the further explanation. I've noticed not everyone is congenial, too bad since this is such a great site to get all sorts of information. Differing opinions are fine, nasty, snide, put-down remarks are not. I can see there would be some unwelcome guests.
Anyway, today is a good day to be in Indiana, no hurricane headed our way, no snow or ice, no earthquake, and despite it being about 90 there are signs of fall in the trees.
If I can figure out the calendar I'll check for some sort of GTG in this area. Thanks again.
For those in Gustav's way, take care and stay safe.
Hey!
I live in Yucaipa, Calif. I am enjoying some of the funny responses!

Have a world map where each member can 'stickpin' their home
Since the where you are this second thread was topped, I thought I'd top mine so newbies can read some history and wondering what was changed.
Several of our fodorites have died and were missed because of their generosity with information, and
their good cheer.
Some were banned and changed names, but unlike alot here who can guess who s who is most of the time, beyond me.

Soon after a quick trip to Peru this month to settle our nerves, we're moving to Melbourne, Australia. Should be there in early December.
I was born in the US and am now living and working in London England, what an experience. I will only be here for a year or so but am taking advantage of the cheap flights in and out of London. Great experience.
