My wife and I are traveling to Rome on April 25th. We have no idea where the best place to stay is. We are trying to stay under 250,000 Lire, but still enjoy a clean and comfortable hotel. Any suggestions among those of you who are well travelled? Also, I do speak Italian so I'm not afraid of being off of the beaten path.

We liked Pensione Alimandi, Via Tunisi 8. It's cheap (160,000 L), clean, and well located (practically across the street from the Vatican museum and close to a Metro stop). It's not pretty by north American standards (rooms have a bit of a college dorm ambience to them), but it's pleasant, has a very nice roof garden, and is in a comparatively calm neighbourhood (still plenty of scooter noise, but there's air conditioning, so you can shut the windows). We'd stay there again.
Hi Walt: Last summer I found the Roma B&B on the internet. They have a web site with a picture and their price is from 96,000 to 140,000, unless they have gone up. Anyway, we stayed there for four nights before we left Rome and one night on our way out. This is a nice place about 5-10 west of St. Peters. There is a bus stop nearby. This is a fine couple and their married son will pick you up at the airport. We met other nice Americans that had also located it on the internet. Look it up:

They serve breakfast in a beautiful, airy dining area. Ask for a large room. They have one small one
on the front that is very small. We stayed in the
little chalet next to the big house the first part
of the visit. It's nice to get a little away from
the big city for a little relaxation, yet it's not
far at all.
Hi Walt - every time we travel to Rome, we stay at the Galeno Hotel. We've just booked again for our trip in June. We will be paying 200,000 lire per room per day - I suppose the April rate is a bit cheaper. It is a 5 min. taxi-ride from Roma Termini. The hotel's addresss: Piazza Galeno, Via dei Villini, 10. Tel: (6) 4402045. From Roma Termini you take Via XX Settembre, past Piazza Porta Pia and the road becomes Via Nomentana. Turn right into Via dei Villini. The hotel is tucked away from all the noise and it is only the first two floors of a 5 storey building - therefore very cool in the summer. It is a quick walk to Villa Borghese and the surroudings are absolutely beautiful and peaceful. Enjoy your trip!!
