Where can I park for free in San Gimignano?

Perhaps not a good answer, Jill, but this is reality based:
Good luck. We were there a few weeks ago and there was NO parking, free or otherwise. We gave up and left the hordes. I'll return to San Gimignano some day or time (early in the day, and/or a different season) when it doesnt feel like an entry to SIx Flags.
Someone else we met said it took 25 minutes to find a space, and from there it was about a 15 minute walk.

We like the lot way in the back where you have to climb a small hill and enter near the top of the town. But unless you get there early, before 10:30 am or so that lot may be full too.

To my knowledge, there is no parking at all for non-residents within the city. There is a series of well-marked external parking lots for cars and buses.
In re Calinurse's information: you will be a lot happier if you are able to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, say after 3.

Ackislander - thank you for the response. I don't mind parking in the external parking lots and arriving after 3 pm. (I heard it is magical at dusk.) I can always walk into the city.

Also best to arrive early or late to avoid the hordes from the tour buses. Interesting city but the crowds make it difficult to enjoy..We've been there a couple of times, and found parking(think it was free) a short walk to town.

We were able to park about a 10 minute walk from the entrance to town - but this was in early May and about 10 am. By the time we left after lunch it looked like Macy's ground floor at Christmas (34th ST - not a mall) and traffic was bumper to bumper.

When you come up the hill to the main entrance to San Gim, take the ring road to the left. As you circle the small town, you will see a lot on the left opposite the main road on the western side of town, that runs down hill slightly but has a lot of spaces. This is the one we use.

Castellina is a great place--small, friendly and not nearly as touristy as San Gim. It has one very particularly interesting site on the way out of town in the direction of Greve, an Etruscan tomb. Look for Tombe Etrusca sign. An eerie place.
