Where can I buy vintage French posters in Paris?

I will be in Paris in May and would like to buy a vintage French advertising poster. Does anyone know where I can buy this? I have done a Google search and only US sites come up. I will also be in Troyes, Nancy and Provence, if anyone knows of a shop for posters there.

Thanks for any info.

Here is a small store in the Marais in Paris that I know:

MORVAN
5 rue Saint Paul
75004 Paris
Open Tuesday to Saturday from 11Am to 7PM

Tel: +33 (0)1 42 72 07 86

Métros:
Saint Paul
Sully Morland

website: http://www.curiositel.tm.fr/paris/le...me/default.htm

Here are some other websites that might help ( I suspect if you email them they might either have a store or help you narrow your search or know stores in the other regions you are visiting):

http://www.poster-paul.com/
http://www.art-and-postershow.com/indexgb.php

Also there are a ton of posters (search under "affiches anciennes") for sale on www.ebay.fr and many of the posters are sold by from store owners-so you might be able to fine more there.

Cinedoc is one possibility. Passage Jouffroy in the 9th.

Along the river near the Louvre and Notre Dame, the street sellers had a nice selection. They also had them with tin backgrounds which would make for something different (and perhaps something more durable for the ride home). They were cheap too, like 5 Euros.

I am not sure how large you would like yours to be, but, I bought a dozen of them, perhaps 8x10 or so, and once home framed them and arranged them on the wall of my dining room. I found them in the bouquinistes on the Seine as mentioned above. They weren't tin, I believe they were cardboard or something semi-rigid (not poster paper, at least).

They were cheap for sure - my framer definitely charged me a lot more to frame them than it cost to buy them!

It appears that people are recommending the cheap copies of vintage posters. It is unclear whether you want the real ones or just copies.

Make sure you bring a strong cardboard mailing tube with you on your journey. We spent a few hours trying to buy one on a trip once.

You can buy tubes in Paris. That's what stationery stores are for. One of the easiest places is the basement of Gibert Jeune at Place Saint Michel.

Thank you, all. This is just what I was looking for. We were in Paris in October, and looked a bit in the 6th, but didn't find anything. There used to be a shop on Rue Jacob that sold old French posters, but it is no longer there. We have bought some in New York, on the upper west side, and we'd like to look in Paris. I'm hoping the prices are better, but I'm not counting on it.

Yes, Kerouac, we are looking for the real ones. The copies are fun, too. We did buy some of those on the Rue de St. Andre des Arts in Oct.

Thanks, again for these suggestions. Now I have some addresses to go to.

While we're on the subject of posters, how about current French posters in Paris? You know, the ones you see for concerts or art exhibits while you're in the city. They can make lovely framed mementos (they always include dates of exhibitions as a reminder of a particular vacation). I remember getting some 25 years ago, but can't for the life of me remember how. Any suggestions? EJ

Try rue St.Andres des Arts in the 6th. The street isn't that long. There's a place that sells postcards on the north side of the street, but I've also seen posters there for several decades now. Happy Travels!

Oh oops, sorry yes the ones along the river are clearly copies! To me it didn't make a difference.

Also, I read in my Air France magazine on the way over that there was a museum exhibition about classic French adverts. Unfortunately I didn't note it down because it wasn't yet open when I visited in March. But if you fly AF, flip through the magazine if you are interested in tracking it down.

Galeries Documents on Rue de Seine in the 6th. They have a wonderful reputation, and you can depend on the authenticity and prices. We have been going there for the last few years and have purchased several.

It is very reasonable to mail them home in a tube. They will do this for you for minimal cost, and they arrive in perfect condition.

The Clignacourt market. And bring buckets of money!! I would think you would want them mounted on canvas--no?

Great info is coming in. Thank you.

glsebs - do you have the exact address on rue de Seine? We are staying on the rue Bonaparte, not that far away. Do you know how the prices compare to US prices? We certainly would mail them home.

Gretchen - yes, I believe I want them mounted on canvas. I think when I bought some in NY they were already mounted.

Gallerie Documents, 53 rue du Seine, is my favorite poster shop. Family owned since the 50's, Mireille Romand is the proprietor. We always have the posters/prints shipped to the US. None have been damaged. Re prices; She sells to dealers as well and often has a booth at the big US trade shows. I consider the prices to be much cheaper than the US; in part because of the large inventory acquired some time ago. If you want Steinlen or TL, this is the place.

I went to the last Gallery walk in the Design district in Miami, and I saw fabulous vintage french advertising posters at Markowicz Fine Art. I know they have an art gallery online where you can see some of the things they sell : mourlot lithograph or you can go on their website : www.markowiczfineart.com
