I'm especially interested in those in Italy, as that will be my next European destination. However, I would appreciate learning of others, too (for future reference). Thanks!

Hi,
I have two... The Mont Seuc cable car from Ortisei (Val Gardena) up to the Seiser Alm and the Lagazuoi on the Falzarego Pass by Alta Badia.

The lift outside of Kandersteg, Switzerland takes you to some beautiful scenery. I don't like heights and this one is not that far above the tree tops.
The cogwheel train to Gonnergrat (sp?) outside of Zermatt is wonderful. I wish I were on it right now.
I wish I had the nerve to take the gondola to Zugspitz, but, alas I had to stay on the ground while my friends rode up.

The funicular up Mount San Salvatore in Lugano. From the top, it's a gorgeous hike down to the perfect lakeside village of Morcote. On the way, you'll pass villages, stone hamlets, and churches. Just gorgeous!

Lots of great lifts in Switzerland, but I'll just mention2 in Italy:
A beautiful and comfortable ride for views: the large rotating cablecar that takes you up 5000 feet to the summit of Monte Baldo from malcesine on Lago di Garda.
The most amazing lift I've ever ridden: the tiny 2-person gondola, about the size of a phone booth, that takes you from Sellajoch up to Rifugio Toni Demetz at the Passo Sassolungo.

I agree entirely with Cimbrone on the Mt. San Salvatore funicular in Lugano. It is a two-stage trip, where you change cars half way up, and there is a delightful restaurant at the top. I make a visit every time I'm in Lugano. Gradyghost

The cable car to the astronomical observatory at the Pic du Midi de Bigorre in the Pyrenees.

The funicular up to the hill town of Orvieto, in Italy. At one point, it seems as though you're going to hit the tram coming down the mountain head-on, then the rail suddenly splits. It's a nice little thrill, and a scenic ride up.

Hi Nomad - Apart from the chairlift on Capri (- Anacapri), most of mine are in the Dolomites:
- LAGAZUOI (- from Falzarego Pass)
- SASS PORDOI (- from Pordoi Pass)
(- two of the most awesome rides you'll ever do )
I love all the rides in Val Gardena:
From Selva:
- CIAMPINOI (- for close-up views of Sasso Lungo)
- DANTERCEPIES (- for panoramic views of Sella Massif and Alta Badia/Alta Gardena
From Ortisei:
- MONT SEUC/ALPE di SIUSI (- as recommended by PJA)
(- panoramic views of Alpe di Siusi from the top)
- SECEDA (- great views towards Fermeda, the Odle ... and the whole of Val Gardena)
From Santa Cristina:
- COL RAISER (- more panoramic views)
From Siusi:
- SEISERALM/ALPE di SIUSI (- great close-up of Sciliar en route to Compatch. One of the longest rides in Europe)
From Saltria (- Alpe di Siusi)
- FLORIAN chairlift (- gorgeous ride with superb view of Sasso Piatto/Sasso Longo group}
From Carezza:
PAOLINA chairlift (- for panoramic views of Latemar and Catinaccio)
From San Martino di Castrozza:
TOGNOLA (- superb views of the Pale di San Martino)
From Cortina:
LE TOFANE (- undoubtedly great views, - although I haven't done it yet )
From Madonna di Campiglio:
Cabinovia for panoramic views of Brenta Dolomites.
From Courmayeur (Valle d'Aosta):
The famous Mont Blanc crossing to Chamonix.
... to name a few
Hope this helps ...
Steve

seaurchin: now you've got me nervous! We'll be in Garmisch this summer and have the Zugspitz on our list. Sounds like I should skip the yummy Germany breakfast in the morning, no?
Most of mine are in Switzerland, inluding:
The Hammedschwand lift, Europe's fastest outdoor elevator:

Zermatt, including the Gornergrat train and the tram up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise - absolutely awesome!
Engelberg, the revolving lift up to Titlis. Hold on! This thing actually twirls in motion.
In Chamonix, France - the tram to Aiguille du Midi.

swisshiker, don't fret, it should be a wonderful experience. There are two lifts, one from the Eibsee and one from Austria. I heard one is scarier than the other but I didn't even try either one.
Sitting at Eibsee and watching the cable cars disappear was enough. Too bad for me!! Have fun and give us a report!
It is a beautiful area.

Swisshiker :
The Zugspitze lift (from Eibsee) is breath-taking (literally). Stunning view over the Alps when you reach the top.
We made the mistake of taking the cogwheel train on the way down and it did not compare : it is mostly tunnels.

Hey swisshiker! If you survived the Hammetschwand lift (or better IMO: elevator) you'll have no problems with the Eibsee-Zugspitze cable car. And there is still the cable car from Ehrwald to the Zugspitze, which is not as breathtaking.
My favourites are in Switzerland. Too many to list them here!

And Mt Etna near catania - chairlift from Philosophers Tower area (or to it?) from where four wheel Jeeps continue the trek i believe - may have order mixed up and lift is periodically out of order due to eruption damage but one of the most unique lifts in Europe in terms of terrain.
