Where are the best designer outlets and 2nd hand stores in Paris

Hi,

My aunt is going to Paris and she is a mega shopper. She's interested in designer shopping, at the "real" stores, outlet stores, and 2nd hand stores. I've been to Paris a few times but I'm not a big shopper (not when I travel anyway) so can't help her. Can a local pro or seasoned traveler to Paris help suggest:
- the most central hotels within easy access to big name designers, or are close to metro stations say less than 5 min walk
- designer outlets
- 2nd hand stores

PLease note by designers, I'm referring to LV, Alaia, Chanel, Dior, etc.

Thanks so much!!

Sorry, I cannot help with specifics but please tell her this: go shopping only when the stores are OPEN because even Oprah couldn't bully her butt into the one that was closed.

Hope she has a great trip.

None of the designers you mention have outlets.
Second hand stores are in the scattered residential areas, try Rue de la Pompe for instance

There are in fact a number of good designer outlets/resales, right in central Paris-which include ALL of the labels you mentioned, and more.

This list should get you started:

MISS GRIFFES-19 Rue des Pathieve
8th arr-Metro: Miromesnil-all designer
labels, plus accessories-you can get some good bargains here, several rooms of clothes, shoes-but you definitely have to take time to look through the selection

CHERCHEMINIPPES-110 Rue de la Cherche Midi

QUOI DE NEUF-15 Galeries des Varietes-second-hand designer shop 2d arr-Rue Montmartre

One big designer outlet is in the lst arr, 104 Rue Faubourg St. Honore-ANNA LOWE-maybe some bargains, but still pretty pricey

There is an Outlet shopping village in Marne-la-Vallee. It doesn't have the designers you mentioned though. I wrote a little trip report about it here:

Enjoy !

Reciproque is a big name...for high-end second hand. Why not get a copy of the Suzy Gershman book on shopping in Paris for your aunt?

One more thing..tell her to concentrate on French designers, not Italian ones like Prada as these will not be bargains in France. As silly as that seeems, many people make the mistake of shopping in, for excample, Gucci, while in Paris.

Didier Ludot (Palais Royal no. 20) is an excellent vintage clothing store carrying Chanel, Balenciaga, etc. Many famous people such as Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon have purchased there. He has another store across the Palais Royal that only sells vintage black dresses. We were there on a Sunday so the stores were closed, but still fun to peek in the windows!

I guess you've got lots of outlets named (I think you see "stock" or "degriffe" in the windows a lot). I stay in Montparnasse usually so have been on rue Alesia now and again, and it seemed to me there were more men's than women's clothing on that street, but I wasn't paying that much attention.

As for the hotel question, not sure if anyone has weighed in on that -- I'd say a lot of the top designer showrooms and shops are in the 8th arrondisement, south of the Champs-Elysees (like on rue Francois Premier or George V or ave Montaigne, around there). So, if you have a hotel between the George V and Alma-Marceau metro stops, that's right there. There are some expensive hotels in there, that's for sure (like the Plaza Athenee and the George V). There are also high-end shops on rue St Honore (8th arr crossing 1st), and around place Vendome, and that's a fairly nice and convenient area to stay, so that's another option. Over there, you'd look for a hotel near Madeleine, Concorde or Tuilleries metro stops.

There are many wonderful suggestions here, thank you SO MUCH! My aunt has never heard of this Fodor's chatroom, a declaration to which I let out a loud (and disapproving) "WHAT??!!!"

So I volunteered to do a search on here for here, seeing as it's been 2 months since I went on vacation myself and I'm already getting the itch I will now print out your great suggestions and promptly show off the power of Fodorites in front of my dear aunt, hehe.

Thanks again, FF

Went to the outlet stores on Rue de la Pompe just last week. There is a metro stop called interestingly enough Rue de la Pompe. LOL We had to change lines at Trocadero. Anyway, come out of the metro, walk to the corner and look down the street and you will see bright orange signs. Those are the shops. The clothes are NOT cheap, but instead of being 2,000.00 they are like 300.00 to 700.00..etc. There were some fabulous pieces in these stores and some not not great. They were mostly in very good condition and clean. Sizes for the most part, pretty small and some only Sara Jessica Parker would have a prayer of getting into. There also were a lot of shoes and accessories. It was fun to look around and if you are interested in fashion and sewing you will enjoy it. I was with a sewer and a gal that is studing fashion design so they were really interested. Made a fun few hours.

Whatever happened to Tati? Did they go out of business? I used to go shopping there with my old friend Countess de Billy.
