when to book train ticket/res
I'm going to be traveling from Amsterdam to Koeln on a Sunday in mid-March, and from Koeln to Frankfurt airport the next morning. I obviously want the faster train, which requires reservations. How long should I go before booking the reservations?
The Monday train is probably not an issue, as I have to make my plane and don't have much choice, but the Sunday train is one I'd like to be more flexible with (i.e., depending on whether I'm eager to leave Amsterdam or want to have some quality time in Koeln).
I'm flexible regarding 1st or 2nd class.
Thanks.
Jim

The faster train (ICEs)do NOT require a reservation...you can ride the ICE services un-reserved. Finding an unreserved seat out of Amsterdam is very possible IF you station yourself on the platform and are one of the first to board.
Otherwise you can reserve a seat usually no more than 60 days out.

thanks for the info.
I went a head and bought the tickets, as well as reservations. The flexible part is how I want to spend my last day in Europe (mostly in amsterdam? more time in Cologne?). I guess I could eat the $11 reservation fee and get on a different train if I'm so moved.
