When Does the Lavender Bloom in Provence?

We will be in Provence next June and would love to see the lavender in bloom. I have read different things about when it is typically in bloom. Is it usually in bloom around the 20th of June, or will we be too early?

No, you won't be too early, unless the spring has been very bad which is most unusual.

You did not state when exactly you would arrive. The weather has been so hot in early June in recent years that you will probably see it in bloom. My rule of thumb used to be about June 20 for atart.

Do not miss the Abbey Senanque, near Gordes, where Cistercian monks farm acres of lavender. It is a breathtaking spot.

Thanks Myriam and Powell for your responses. We will arrive about June 19 for three or four days. I went to school in Aix many years ago and remember seeing the Abbey Senanque, but it was in the fall. I have always wanted to see the lavender. I hope we will hit it at the right time!

I love Provence, specially when the lavender is in bloom. We live in Barcelona (about 400 km from Provence) and every year we spend 3 or 4 days in Provence on the early summer.
Lavender is in bloom from june to august depending on the area. It's important to visit the correct zone depending on the month because in some areas the flowers appear before and is recollected before too.
I reccommend you a web site where you will find all the information necessary.
The area near Sault is very nice.

Alex, Thanks so much for your reply. I can't seem to access that site you gave me. Are you sure that's the right address?

I found it. It's www.routes-lavande.com. That site says the lavender doesn't bloom in the Luberon area until July. Is that correct? Or has global warming hastened that date?

The lavender does bloom a couple of weeks later than here in the Alpilles area...
ours usually blooms around mid to late June, and the lavender around the Abbaye de Senanque blooms a few weeks later.

This year it started blooming here about the middle of June. Who know what it will do next year with the crazy weather we've been having lately.
