What's up with Rome hotel prices?

I was in Rome in November and stayed at two lovely hotels, the Valadier (130 Euros per night) and the Piranesi (170 or 180 a night), both for a single room, both near the Piazza del Puopolo. A friend is going in October, so I looked up the current prices, and they've almost doubled! How could this happen in just a few months? This has nothing to do with the exchange rate - all prices are in Euros. Does anyone have any good recommendations for decent hotels under 200 euros? And is this happening all over Rome and/or Europe, or are these particular hotels suddenly hot? they did seem pretty reasonable given the location and the lovely appointments.

I think that October is high season in Rome still that's why hotel rates are higher. It's like that in Paris as well.

Supply and demand andib. Western Europe is so much expensive then in the past. I understand your shock.

Rates are less stunning when you get out into the smaller towns which is another good reason to expand at least a portion of one's itinerary beyond the usual destinations of Rome, Venice, Florence, etc.

Yes, prices have been skyrocketing in the recent years. That's mainly due to the current economic situation (life costs so much more than before, and most families have a hard time to live).
We run a nice bed and breakfast in the centre of Rome (Monteverde-Trastevere area) and that's what we do to pay our very high rent.
We can rent a large room with private bathroom and a balcony for just 100 EUR per night (for two people, or just 60 EUR per night for one person). Breakfast included. Wireless internet connection 24h included. Pictures are available.
