I will be in Munich next week. How do I get to Neuschwanstein without a car?
Whats the best way to get to Neuschwanstein from Munich?

Train to Fuessen and either taxi or public transport from there is one possibility.
Agree. We took the train to Fuessen, then public bus from there. (sorry, but I can't remember the route #)
There are frequent trains from München Hauptbahnhof to Füssen. The most economical way is to use a Bayern-Ticket (€27 for up to five people) or a Bayern-Ticket Single (€19 for one person). It allows you unlimited use for a day of regional trains, which are all that run from München to Füssen. It also covers the bus from Füssen to Hohenschwangau.
If you are going on a weekend, you can leave anytime. On a weekday, you can't use the Ticket until after 9 AM. There is a train leaving München Hbf at 9:51. It makes a three minute, "cross-platform" change in Buchloe and arrives in Füssen at 11:55. The bus (#78) leaves for Hohenschangau at 12:05 and arrives just down the street from the castle ticket kiosk at 12:13.
If you want to leave earlier, there is a train leaving the Hbf at 8:52 and getting you to Hohenschwangau at 11:13. You can't use the Bayern-Ticket that early on weekdays. However, that train stops in Geltendorf at 9:22. You can buy an MVV single trip ticket to Geltendorf for €6,60 per person (€6,30 if you use a credit card in a ticket automat) and use the Bayern-Ticket from there. For three to five people, a Gesamtzone Partner Tageskarte for €18 can be used to Geltendorf.
A number of bus routes go from the Füssen to Hohenschwangau, but they all leave from Bus stop #2 in front of the Füssen Bahnhof and are synched with the train. You can see a plan of the station and bus stops at www.stationsdatenbank.bayern-takt.de/StationsdatenbankBEG/Steckbrief.html?lang=de&efz=8002156. That page also has some pictures of the station.
WOW! Larry that is the most complete and through answer I have ever seen here. Way to go.
We will have seven adults visiting Neuschwanstein from Munich between Christmas and New Year's... Is the "Bayern-Ticket (€27 for up to five people)" ticket able to be used for five adults or must some be children?
Would a weekday or a weekend day be less crowded over the winter holidays?
Thanks for the great info!
To make things a even simpler...the busses AND taxis essentially leave from an area directly across the street from the train station in Fuessen; you'll see it on your right as you exit the station.
Dukey added a rather important point that I forgot.
>We will have seven adults visiting Neuschwanstein from Munich between Christmas and New Year's... Is the "Bayern-Ticket (€27 for up to five people)" ticket able to be used for five adults or must some be children?
Five adults are OK. If the children are all your own the number is unlimited (i.e. parents and 6 children - yes it happens sometimes - all on one BT)
>Would a weekday or a weekend day be less crowded over the winter holidays?
Most probably weekend day, but it will make less difference than during any other holiday period.
Just chek that the castle is open in this time.
Friends of mine are taking a direct coach tour from near the Munich train station, which sounds fairly easy. Not sure that equates with "best" depending on your criteria!
I drove a MB, but was terribly disappointed.
M
how much would a taxi be from the station?

This post answered my question of "how" -- now, can anyone tell me how LONG it takes to get there from Munich by train? Thanks!

Thanks for cluttering up the thread and bringing up a 3 month old topic that could be used with the search function.
Stop the bookmark lunacy.
OUCH!

Found this old thread.
Question: Is it worth going to Fussen from Munich the night before the castle tour? With more time now, is train ok or should we still rent a car? From tripadvisor, a lot of people thought doing a day trip via train takes too much time.
We'd like to spend some time hiking around the area, and possibly see the Unesco church (Wie**?) as well.
Thanks
