Have to say that I forget about the MP3 player until I'm almost ready to go. So I'm usually frantically loading a few new songs at the last minute.
However, as I don't use it except on holiday the collection I loaded when I first got it comes up fresh and wonderful every time!
I take a little opera (highlights - I'm a learner!); some classics - Schumann, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Elgar, Mozart, Bruckner, Cesar Franck (Symphonic Variations), Debussy; and pop/rock that will date me big-time ..
Whole albums from Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, the Floyd, Steely Dan, Crowded House. Then some Paul Simon, some Dylan, bit of Bowie, touch of Clapton, Jefferson Starship, Nina Simone, Nick Cave.
What else? well, like I said, I find tracks I'd forgotten putting on there.
Cheers.

Superimpose theme music on my travels? No way!
Those who travel with earphones are isolating themselves from the world around them. I hope, at least, that I am not subjected to the leakage of percussive sounds.

Padraig,
Sort of depends on how many long distance bus/train trips you make.
There's a limit to the conversations you can have over 8-12 hours (or longer), and they are language-dependent, or course. Reading is good, but a little music is good too.
When I'm static that little gadget doesn't see the light of day. But, hey, so much more convenient than an old-style walkman and a handful of tapes (laugh here all you under 35s!).
May one ask how you pass the time on those long, long journeys?

Ok everyone, dont take the bait! He must have had a bad night.
Music is fantastic on train trips especially through the countryside. It only can enhance the experience.
My choices are:
Anything Baroque
Edith Piaf
Aretha Frankin
Cranberries

We take my OH's ipod on road trips with us. It is loaded with all his favourite music, which, for the most part, is mine too (luckily) - lots of blues and rock. It is then set to random play in the car.
But also we load it up with podcasts, from the BBC and elsewhere and catch up on programmes we never seem to have time to listen to otherwise. I love spoken word when travelling so these podcasts are great. Since we usually have the laptop with us also we can download the latest podcasts whilst on the road.

afterall, I'll give you the long train trips on condition that you use good earphones that don't leak sounds.
I don't make many such trips because I structure my holidays differently: go somewhere; work around the local area. But when actually travelling, I choose to read and/or write.

Zeus asked: "And what is a "gadfly"?"
It's another term for a horsefly. See http://mw1.meriam-webster.com/dictionary/gadfly

I, too, like to create playlists of music related to my destination. (NOTE: This is not to listen to while walking around but to listen to prior to the trip and on my flights).
For example, my Italy playlist includes:
Themes from the films:
Il Postino
Cinema Paradiso
Malena
O Mio Babbino Caro (used in A Room with a View)
"What If We Went to Italy" sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter
"Caruso" sung by Andrea Bocelli
I have lots of Celtic music for trips to Ireland and Edith Piaf for France.

I love to put together a playlist of theme music, too. I play it mostly while I'm running, before the trip, during and after. It's very evocative for me - nothing better, IMHO, than running along the streets of Venice in the early morning, with Vivaldi in the background! And then I get to replay the trip, to the same music, while running at home.
I've done this for Italy of course, France (mostly jazz), Spain (I love classical guitar), Czech Republic and Hungary (Dvorak and several modern composers who really broadened my listening repertoire). For running a race in San Francisco in the Spring, I put together a S.F. playlist. And for our upcoming trip to New Orleans, I put together a wide-ranging collection, from zydeco, to Pete Fountain, to the Neville Brothers.

I agree wholeheartedly about not "plugging in" to drown out the REAL sounds of the destination. I use my music merely for train/air travel, exercise or while writing in my journal. Also, I plug into speakers to evoke the mood when I'm in the room.
It's also a great reminder when you're back home and listen to a certain tune that takes you back to a moment in time while you were on your journey....aaaahhh.
