What would be a great daytrip from Prague and why?
We're fairly certain that Prague will be our next adventure. I've never been to central europe before and I hear that Prague is absolutely beautiful! But we would like to maximize our visit to Prague by visiting another city that will complement our experience in that part of the world.
We are great lovers of old world architecture, museums and natural scenic beauty. Hopefully, we can find something that will be easily accessed via a short train ride. We will not rent a car while we're there.
We will be there in early March. Can you give me any ideas of places that I can go close to Prague, but different enough so that we won't feel that we are replicating our efforts?
I will appreciate getting your insight as to why this place would be special to visit.

Subsequent respondents will probably recommend Kutna Hora to see St. Elizabeth's church, or a bus trip to Karlstein Castle.
That aside, you'll get more of what you want if you rent a car for a few days to enable Cesky Krumlov, the Mikulov area of Moravia; also, there was what we found to be a fascinating small museum in Uheriske Hradiste (spelling??) dedicated to the folk costumes worn pre-1930 in various regions (very intricately colored/patterned clothing--contrasted sharply with my pre-conceived notion of what "peasants" wore).
Above all else, have Krusovice beer. IMHO, it's well above all others

If you want to see something very different from Prague, go to Dresden in East Germany, about 2.5 hours train ride away.
The historical centre was completely destroyed in WWII but is partly reconstructed (still in process). Great art collections, quite scenic train ride.

Karlovy Vary (the old Carlsbad spa town) is very interesting and a very different type of scenery and construction including a fabulour Russian Orthodox church. However, i don't know about early March as we were there in the summer.

Hallo Rennee, I am sorry, i am not well in English. I hawe red your quest. I recommend a town Mikulov to visit. It is old town on the border Czech republik and Austria (the main city Viena is 75 km from Mikulov and you can visit too). Sights in Mikulov - Jewish monuments (Synagogue, Cemetery, Jewish Quarter Trail) Chateau and the museum of viticulture in South Moravia (Mikulov is The largest Moravian wine-growing area) You can see biggest tun in the central Europe (101,000 litres). Brno is nice, it is a smaller version and less touristy than Prague but still has a city feeling. For cute/quaint I would recommend Cesky Krumlov. It has lots of outdoorsy type things to do, but also cute shops, castles nearby, canals/rivers running throughout the town. Very charming. I do not know if a train goes there, but buses certainly do.
I am not sure how much time you will have, but I think you would also really enjoy Krakow in Poland which you can get to by an overnight train from Prague. It is one of my favorite cities, aside from Prague. Just beautiful!
