what travel purchase have you received the most compliments on?

I love to shop in Paris and I was just wondering about things that others have purchased that have garnered lots of attention from people back here in the States.

I tend to splurge on travel shopping, so I have to laugh at this: the thing I've received the most compliments on has been the lumps of colored sugar I got at some gourmet shop's branch on the left bank. The colors are lovely - violet, pink, peach, lemon yellow and everybody wants to know where to get them.
The next commented on items are a couple of Buccellati silver picture frames I bought at their shop on Place Vendome. They are really beautiful and old black and white family photos look wonderful in them.
A pair of Ines de la Fressange shoes that are pure Parisian charm have been complimented, but the treasures from Hermes have brought nary a glance. Guess it's a good thing I bought them for myself.
In December I bought a pair of Arche Boots in Paris. A style that has not come to the states. People are always commenting on how cool they are. They are!

Wow--what great purchases. c, your husband sounds like a great guy. I keep telling mine that jewelry is always a good bet, but he still hasn't completely let that sink in! My my complimented purchases include a knit knee length black and white skirt from GL, and a brown studded wrap around belt with a brown leather flower attached. Of course the most remarked upon piece is an amber necklace I bought at this cheapo place in Montmartre--go figure! I look forward to more shopping when I return in two weeks!

Thanks,Olivia ~we are usually in Europe on our anniversary and sometimes my birthday so I prepare him before time that I must have something special from wherever we are...He just happens to be a great shopper also, I feel lucky
We also view these trips as opportunities to get things for ourselves and the house that we don't see in the US - we have a very old house that is restored and always can use a new/old painting, doo dad ..We won't even talk abut the stuff I buy myself! :0) Happy shopping~C

A burgandy chenille boa that was popular a couple of years ago, I wear it anyway and everyone wants to know where I got it.

In fact, I'm wearing it right now: a burgundy jersey skirt, ankle length, swishy hem. Women always want to know where I got it (vendor in the metro).

Can anyone suggest a good, and not outrageously expensive, jewelry store on the Left Bank?

There is a little place on rue Jacob right near rue St Benoit..the name might be Henri Gautier... they have a tiny window with jewelry that he makes, it is really one of a kind, not too expensive and kind of different, techniques, colors and all.You might want to look.Otherwise, a lot of times I get presents, they are things I saw in the window and do not remember the name of the store~but someone was sneaky and went back to the store and bought something

I always get compliments on a beaded purse that I bought at Bon Marche in Paris - it was on sale for about $20, but was originally priced over $100.

A leather coat purchased at Pokers, store in San Croce Piazza, Florence, Italy. It's a deep rich chocolate brown; swing style with alternating strips of leather and suede. Often complimented when I wear it.

This is going to sound silly, but the purchase(s) that I get the most compliments about are the 2 pair of flat shoes that kind of look like elf shoes that are made of moose leather from a third generation shoe shop in Tampere, Finland. They were so inexpensive and THE MOST comfortable shoes that I wish that I had bought them in other colors. I wear them with pants, skirts, anything and I think of Finland every time that I wear them.

The tapestries I purchased in Amboise, the garnet earrings in Prague, the lovely pashimas in Paris, and the wool serape in Italy and the oil paintings I have collected are the most commented on items I purchases.

I bought the pashimas in Paris at the flea market from a lovely woman from India, Cheryl. She was darling and gave me a great price on the two scarves.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy, Olivia!

A very contemporary turquoise ring I bought on the Plaza in Santa Fe. Also, a bracelet made of laminated rosebuds (real ones) I bought in a little shop in Aix.

C-
You are clearly a girl after my own heart. Artisan-designed jewelry is my weakness and makes a huge dent in my budget...which I why I was already planning to copy this post expressly for your jewelry store recommendation on the Rue Jacob. Can-t wait to visit there when I'm in Paris in April!!!

I bought a silver and moonstone necklace at a silversmith's store in Edinburgh (Bridget of Edinburgh) last July and have worn it constantly ever since. The moonstone changes color a bit depending on what I'm wearing and people frequently comment on it. I will wear it until I go on another fabulous trip and get some other piece of jewelry to take its place. I love having the constant reminder of that special place and time in my life, I feel like it's my amulet.
