What to wear to a show in London
My husband and I are going to London this month and have been told to see a show while we are there. How dressed up does one need to be to go to a show in London? What should a female wear or does it matter?

"Anything that works for American business casual "
...is, in London, at the "stuffily overdressed" range of clothes worn at theatres.
The dress code at theatres here is exactly the same as at cinemas. Or in your house when watching TV.

Good points, alanRow.
Most of the theatres I have been to have very narrow seats and little leg room. Your neighbours will be very close. Very steep access in the aisles too so I'd give the stilettos a miss too.

People wear whatever they're comfortable in. On a practical point though - theatres in London are often uncomfortably warm, even in the winter time. Wear layered clothing (and take advantage of the cloakroom facilities).

The times I've had the wonderful experience of theatre in London (musicals and Shakespeare-at-the-Globe), I attended at the end of long days of sightseeing, wearing what I had on all day for lots of walking, not having had a chance to return to my hotel to freshen up other than with what makeup I carried with me--so I certainly wasn't very dressed up. I had jeans on once I think. Layers are good suggestion. I had students with me twice, and many of them were in decent jeans and "nice" tees while others were a bit more dressed up in scarves and skirts (that they'd worn all day, though). We fit right in. I also saw people who looked like they'd come straight from a business office. Almost anything goes, it seemed. It is a bad idea, as alanRow says, to have much with you, so if you don't have chance to stow stuff in your room before hand, just plan to not do much shopping this day.

The reason people ask "what to wear" to Theater in London is because in many parts of the U.S. people dress up to go to the theater usually wearing their "Sunday Best". They want to know if there is a need to pack a dress or coat and tie for that one ocassion, so(IMO) it is not a stupid request or question.
Patrick and almcd are right in that "Nobody Cares" what you wear, just wear what you would normally to the movies in the States and you'll be just fine. People are munching on Popcorn, candy and sodas during the show and eating ice cream from a trolley parked in the aisle during intermission so it is very casual as compared to the States, just like going to the movies.

This is true of most indoor spaces in London. Indeed, I find this to be the case in much of Europe.

To be fair, depending on the show and the theatre, an older generation in the UK would have thought much the same. My mother would have done so (hat and gloves), as she would when she went away on holiday (heaven forfend that some B&B proprietor should get an opportunity to look down on her).

....also pick up goodies for half time (or as they say there the interval) before you go. I pick up a 500 ml bottle of diet coke cherry (I hate places that only serve pepsi in any event) sometimes being able to get 2 for £1.19 whereas the 330 ml cans of whatever they choose to serve might be as much as £2...I pick up a small package of potato chips (walkers) also...too bad ice cream won't keep for they charge £3 for a very small cup of ice cream....
