Okay, I know shorts are not for the French, but I am an American and a tourist...
When we were in Provence before (always in September) I pretty much was able to wear walking shorts. Is it safe to say I can do it in mid May too? Leaving in about ten days, and deliberating over what to take. We pack extremely light and check everything when we fly.

May is a warm month usually. Walking shorts are ok but some have been there wearing short shorts and I wish they could hear what the locals say. The poppies should be in bloom.

I always wear shorts during the day in Provence. Even in Avignon, Arles, Aix, etc. We've spent 32 weeks in Provence & the Cote d'Azur. I never wear shorts to dinner - except at a very simple outisde cafe.
The French love to torture themselves - high heels on the ladies on cobblestone streets & climbing around Chateaux, men in jeans/long pants in 95 degree temps. The locals will know you're a tourist - just don't wear large flourescent white running shoes or "strident" white socks up to your knee. I wear shorts with Timberline deck shoes & no socks.
